| Has anyone had any issues that would cause them to distrust the reliability of Factory gen 4 Glock 17 magazines with the increased strength Glock factory spring and factory +2 extensions (the newer ones just marked +)? |
|
I had a bunch of older G19 LEO mags with weak springs that are my range mags for my G19. I bought the 11 coil 2551 springs for the G17 mags with +2 and swapped out my G17 mag springs for the 2551's and added +2's to my G17 mags. I took the 33510 10 coil G17 mag springs from my G17 mags and swapped out my G19 mag springs and added +2's to my G19 mags.
I figured in the long run it was a cheaper way to get +2's on my mags buying half the amount of springs. (Most of the original G17 mags were new so the springs were new to begin with). Also, I have been buying 33 Round mags ($24.99 with free shipping for 5 from PSA or from midway) and using the +2's from those instead of buying more. So far, so good with no issues but time will tell. I am using them all for range mags. |
| Just about all of my G17 mags have +2 extensions plus the factory 11 coil springs. They are marked with the Glock logo and "+", so not sure if that is the same thing you are inquiring about. I've had mine for a couple of years. I have never had any FTF or magazine related issues. I also run a + extension on my carry G26, with appropriate spring change, which also have never had any issues. |

Over the years, there have been a number of reports about the factory extended baseplates popping off when the magazines are dropped. Most of the time when this topic comes up, someone reports that a Glock rep has told them that they do not recommend using the extensions for duty or self defense. Always seemed a little odd to me that they would offer the 33-round mag and others from the factory with the extension installed, if that's the case.
I had thought these failures were attributed to the older (from 20 years ago) extensions, since people have reported that the current production extensions are "good to go." However, ETS has apparently tested the extensions on both their mags and Glock 33-rounders recently and found that they still pop off when dropped: Glock ETS and Magpul mags I have some of the extensions and find that they work great on the range. I haven't tried dropping them though. |

Extended base plates put a lot of leverage on those little ribs that hold on them on. It also seems they are reporting the base pads popping off with fully loaded 33rd magazines regardless if it is OEM or ETS mags. I might be willing to sacrifice an extended base pad for the sake of me knowing they will not fall apart when dropped hard. |

Is this an issue with all magazine extensions or just the factory +2s? I read a little bit on that page in the link and someone mentioned: So a combination of both tongue/groove being plastic being the issue? I would think a +5/6 extension would add significantly more leverage, but would be stronger due to being made of aluminum. Would aluminum + base pads be considered duty grade then? Or is there no such thing? It also seems they are reporting the base pads popping off with fully loaded 33rd magazines regardless if it is OEM or ETS mags. I might be willing to sacrifice an extended base pad for the sake of me knowing they will not fall apart when dropped hard. Bottom line for me, based on the impact testing I have seen, I won't carry a mag with an extension. Just my $.02. |
