So everybody and their brother is offering aftermarket barrels, and all their cousins are offering coating services for those barrels.
Are the aftermarket barrels worth the cost? Will the average shooter see any improvement? Same goes for coatings. Are they worth the expense or is it just for looks? I'm sure this has come up before, but I'm wondering if there have been any advances in technology that now show there one way or the other. |
| Do you need a threaded barrel or conversion? If yes they are worth the cost.... If no they are not. The accuracy difference between the factory and aftermarket depends on the ammo more than the barrel. Most people myself included (I consider myself a good shot with a pistol) cannot notice a difference off hand shooting with different barrels. Few people over the years have done testing between barrels using a rest and removing the human factor and the end result was some did better with one type of ammo than others but the difference was not worth the cost. Spend the money on ammo, improving the trigger and yourself. |

it may be me but I picked up a G19 oem barrel off the ee that was TiN coated, the gold coating, and it cleans up very easy, really seems slick, but so is the oem.
I will say my nibx G17 does clean up much easier than the oem, again may just be me but I plan to have my poly 80 slide and barrel coated. I am only doing it based on looks not so much functionality |
| For 99% of us aftermarket barrels ( unless a caliber conversion or for suppressor threading as mentioned) are going to show little to no accuracy improvement and my experience is I have seen a significant number of pistols have reliability issues with the aftermarket barrels. Coating and finishes are a personal taste fashion statement that does not change the guns performance in any way, sort of like one guy likes his cars black and on their likes red |
| I recently converted my G23 to 9mm using a S3F conversion barrel. Did the full coversion and replaced the extractor and ejoctor to the 9mm parts. Only did it because I wanted to have a 2nd G19. I did notice a very slight accuracy improvement over my stock G19. Some of it might just be mental. Probably not worth it if you just buying a replacement barrel. You'll get better accuracy with $20.00 OEM "-" connnector. |
