I had a couple of hours to kill Friday so I went to a gunstore to check out a Glock 38. They did have one in stock, I think it holds 8+1. The slide does look thicker than the slide on a 19 so I don't know whether it would use the same holsters. I like the midsize Glock frame, but have been considering something other than the 9mm I have in that size, but my similarly sized Glock 36 holds 6+1. I don't know that there's that tremendous a difference btw 45acp/gap and 357sig/40S&w in performance that the more oddball 45gap cartridge is worth the hassle over the more established 40S&W. I was surprised that Gander Mountain didn't have the 38 in their system yet while the little gunstore I went to had one in their safe. They didn't have it on display, though, and said the only one they had sold was to a guy who was sort of a collector. |
It does hold 8+1 and it will not use the same holsters as the G19 for the reasons you have stated.
I favor the compact (mid size) frame Glocks as well. As far as caliber, I much favor shooting the G38 in 45 GAP over the G23 in 40. The G38 is so much more controllable and with less muzzle flip, and double taps are easier with the G38. The 40 does have decent ballistics and ammo is plentiful in comparison to the GAP but I think that is slowly changing. The future of the GAP round is unknown at this time but I think it is a winner, It has become my favorite pistol. You really should fire a G38 if you can. |
+1 on both counts... Very happy with mine so far. Compact, but big enough for my hands to fit it, and its a .45. The only gotcha for me is that I have to learn to keep my thumb away from the extended slide lock. I've accidently locked it back a few times when I allowed my thumb to brush up against it when firing. I didn't have that issue with the G19/23 (std flat slide lock). Check out Midway and Ammoman for .45 GAP. |
| I checked out a 38 at a GSSF match this past weekend. It was the personal weapon of the GSSF coordinator from Georgia. I found it to be slightly top heavy due to the thicker slide. Everyone who shot it was impressed. I watched several shooters mow down the Glock the Plates station in 3 seconds with the 38. Everyone also commented that it had less recoil than the .40 and some said it "felt" like less or about the same recoil as the 19 in 9mm. |
