Hit the local gun show.
The Gen 4 G17s were running in the low $500s. The Gen 3 G17s were just about $400. Both were brand new. I thought it was a bit unusual to see a previous model at such a reduced priced. There seems to be a lot of praise for the Gen 2 and Gen 4. Is the G3 G17s the red headed step child? If so, why? |
| My LGS sells Gen III's 100 dollars cheaper too. But more expensive. 589/489. Grrrrr.... I guess the grip options on the Gen IV's are what make it more expensive. And that it's newer?? I don't know. But I love my Gen III 26. I personally think if I were going to buy a 17 right now I might prefer a Gen III. Although I don't think I'd mind a Gen IV. But 100 dollars is a 100 dollars and if you feel like you don't need the changeable backstraps and extra grippiness...... I would just buy ammo. Or sights.... Or mags with that money. |

Wow, what gun show was that? I went to the one in west palm beach this weekend and didn't see any Gen 3's in the $400 range. I certainly would have picked one up at that price. The cheapest I bought a Gen 3 was $450 out the door. The Gen 3's are perfectly fine shooters. Gen 4s are just a marketing gimmick by glock to sell more generations of glock. Yes, the Gen 4 has the new grip texturing, multiple back straps to adapt to different hand sizes, a new recoil system...etc. I haven't noticed a significant change in recoil in the 9MM's. Yes, certainly in the 40S&W the new recoil system has help with wear and on muzzle flip. |
| I like my Gen 4 G17, but I wish it had the same trigger as the Gen 3. I've never really noticed a difference in recoil between the two. Supposedly the Gen 4 RSA will last longer, but its also more expensive than a Gen 3 RSA, so thats kind of a wash in my book. All things considered, I'd probably buy the Gen 3 if it were $100 less and came with the same number of magazines. |
| I bought a glock 17 gen3 over a gen 4. Gen 3 has better grip texture imho. Also has larger aftermarket parts selection. The only con is you get one less mag. Also some of the earlier Gen4's had recoil spring issues but they were recalled so that shouldn't be an issue. |

Quoted: You can't find used Glocks around me for $400. The difference in new and used Glocks here is about $5. True in my area as well, usually Arms list is full of used Glocks priced higher than a good new price. Most are listed around $550-$650 and seem to sell. |

Gen 3 is fine for me, and will be until they release another Gen without finger grooves, once they get that ergonomic disaster remedied changing backstraps might offer some benefit.
For $400 I'd buy one and leave it in the safe unfired, they generally list for more than that used here. |

Both the Gen 3 and the Gen 4 are current production models. I usually seem them a lot closer in price than listed here.
The Gen 4 is built around on the SF frame. So you start with a smaller grip size, and can use the included back straps to customize to your own preference (including matching the Gen 3 grip size), including a beavertail. The Gen 4 has the dual spring Recoil Spring Assembly. The inside of the frame is also updated to support that larger RSA. The Gen 4 has the larger, reversible mag catch. The Gen 4 has the RTF3 grip texture. The Gen 4 comes with three mags. The Gen 3 white (low capacity mags) and red label (standard capacity mags) guns come with 2, and the blue label comes with 3. Additionally, some internal parts were updated in the Gen 4 guns. Third party parts are available for both. |

I doubt the price will stay that low for long. If you want it, better buy it now. Do you remember the vendor? Quoted:

Hmmm, sounds like I should have picked it up. Sounds like a good reason to attend the next show in a few months. I doubt the price will stay that low for long. If you want it, better buy it now. Do you remember the vendor? When you walked into the larger building, it was a very small shop (2-4 tables) immeidately on your right and about 2-3 rows up. I believe it was one of those people who have a FFL as a side businuess. Cute girl working which is one reason why I stopped to review the inventory. |
