Forget it guys, I looked back to page two and found the answers to my question.  Thanks.

I had three 2nd generation Glocks before, a 19, 22 and 23, but sold or traded them all a few years ago.  I've decided to start playing around with them again, so I traded for a G17 tonight, and I'm getting my old G19 back this weekend from the friend I traded it to.

The G17 I got tonight is in excellent condition, and I was told that it is a PD trade-in, but it appears to be practically new.  He only has one mag with it, and it's a NFML mag.

I know you can tell a 3rd generation Glock by the finger groove grip and the equipment rail.  But, what's the difference between a 1st and 2nd generation gun?

Not 100% sure, but I think gen 1 doesn't have finger grooves, gen 2 has finger grooves, gen 2.5 has finger grooves with checkering, gen 3 has finger grooves with checkering and an accessory rail.

The first gens have a smooth grip and 2nd have the grip without finger grooves.

I've never even seen a Generation 1 before.  All of the Glocks I had before were 2nd.  I'd like to pick up a new G20, but not here in MA, unfortunately.  When $$ allows, I'll be in the market for a 2nd generation G20 to play with.  Hopefully sometime this summer.

Is it possible to switch the grip frames between generations?

Yes. However don't switch frames(receiver) to different calibers unless you know what you are doing.

i.e. Using a 1st gen G17 receiver with any G22 40S&W upper(and trigger mech housing) would more then likely crack the receiver, where as using a 3rd gen G17(3 pin) receiver with any full size 40 or 357SIG upper(and trigger mech housing) is ok.
