So, I think I finally want to convert to the dark side and get my first Glock. My main motivations for getting a Glock is their reputation for reliability, aftermarket support, and the fact that I can find factory mags for less than $40 pretty easily.
Looking at a 9mm but need some help before I make my final decision. So Gen 3 or Gen 4? 17 or 19? What other mags are you guys using successfully aside from factory? Any thoughts on whether I should get one with the factory threaded barrel or buy an aftermarket threaded barrel? I've seen there is one that has a factory barrel and suppressor sights? Should that be the front runner? I have an Octane 45 pending with the ATF at the moment of that matters. Thanks guys. |

I would go gen4, but you won't have any problems with gen3.
Most people love the G19. It's a perfect mid sized gun, it's good enough for duty use or CCW. The 17 is to big for me to CCW well personally. I would stick to factory mags. They are cheap enough and very common. Lots of people seem to like the new Magpul mags also however most say they will only use them as range mags. I have seen and shot with them once on a friends gun and they seem to work just fine. If your going to suppress your glock at some point then I would go ahead and get the threaded bbl. It seems split around here between people who like the factory threaded bbl and aftermarket ones like Storm Lake or Lone Wolf ect. I have no experience with this yet but somebody will be along shortly to answer with their opinions. I say go for it! You will not regret owning either the 19 or 17. Just have to figure out what it's purpose is and if it will fit your hand/body type if your going to CCW it. |
| I went to my lgs and held a Gen 4 17 and a Gen 3 19. I liked the feel of the 19 better but for some reason the Gen 4 17 felt lighter in hand. They did not have the Gen 4 19 in stock. I ended up ordering a Gen 4 19 and I'm really happy with it. Size is comfortable, easy to conceal and the grips on the gen 4 are way better than the gen 3, plus you could change the back strap to fit your hand. |

Gen4 19 is the perfect handgun. It's a good one. Not perfect, but light wieght and reliable. I love mine. Seriously love it. Some people with small hands have trouble with the chunky grip. The trigger is not ideal, but it is learnable. |

Thanks guys. Good info there. I should also mention that either is really bigger than I would like for a CCW. This is more bedside/HD and range gun. Although if I decide I ever want to open carry, I would likely carry the Glock. If you're considering it for HD or open carry go with a 34. I do believe everybody's first Glock should be a 19 though. The 34 won't impress you until you bang it out at a competition and see what a long sight radius can do for you. The 19 has a way of growing on you because it is such a perfect general purpose 9mm. | The more I look at them the more I'm thinking of the G17TB or G19TB. It seems that it's around $30-50 more than the standard but has the factory threaded barrel and suppressor sights. But then I know nothing of the quality of those add-ons and they seem a little harder to find in stock. |

For a dedicated, "never going to conceal it" bedside or HD gun, I'd go with the Gen 4 G17 (actually, I'd do the Gen 4 G34, but that wasn't one of your options For a general use, all purpose, "this is my only gun" 9mm the Gen 4 G19 is hard to beat. Really hard to beat. If I could only own one handgun, it would be a Gen 4 G19. The only good answer is to get both (or all three I went with an aftermarket threaded barrel because I already had a 1/2-28 booster for my Gemtech Multimount. I think the factory threaded barrels are metric threads, so take that for what it's worth. |

I like the 17, I don't carry a Glock, but I carry a handgun that is slightly larger in a dimension or two occasionally, not a big deal. I don't think you're making a mistake with either, sight radius has some advantages, and the 17 has a little larger capacity without hanging out not that it really matters.
Probably need to see what thread pattern can work with your pending can to guide your barrel choice. If both contact the manufacturer and see if there's any issue/advantage to one or the other. |
| I've owned about 25 Glocks so far and currently have a dozen or so. If I had to sell all of them but one, I would keep my gen 4 19. It isn't the perfect competition gun, but it'll work. It's fairly easy to conceal with the right holster and belt, though lately I'll admit I've been carrying a 17 a lot without any trouble. |

Well I prefer to carry a single stack so I've got that covered. As far as the can goes, I've got an octane pending so threads won't matter too much as I can just buy a different piston. I did hear that metric is better for use with an O-ring to help prevent the can from backing off though. Not sure if there's validity to that.
I'm having trouble finding either the 17 or 19 with the threaded barrel in stock for less than $600 though. |

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I actually like having two barrels. It only takes 10 seconds to switch them out. I use the threaded when shooting suppressed, but I just throw the factory barrel in for shooting unsuppressed. The other benefit is, since I have multiple G19s, I can put the threaded barrel in any of them. https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/10269348_10204470892151801_57375771573813874_n.jpg?oh=c76b9085dfd04e0141c4d3817bcf4351&oe=55EC4EC4 Quoted:

Mainly because my holster won't fit with the threaded barrel, and I'm too lazy to modify it lol. |

Lookin' good. A 19 is a helluva handgun. Stock up on Glock mags until you lay in a good stash. Buy some of Pmags later when you don't need 'em. They'll change 'em every couple of years 'improving' 'em but they'll never be anywhere close to a real Glock mag. Good advice. So the question is how many mags do I need to get to that good stash level? Is $25 a good price for factory 15 round mags? |

Thanks guys for the advice. A Gen3 Glock 19 followed me home today. I was calling around all day from work and the only place that had what I was looking for in stock was Cabela's. So I'm sure I overpaid for the instant gratification but then I remembered I had some Cabela's gift cards from work and a bunch of Cabela's Club points I hadn't used. It was $629 before the $150 or so in gift cards and points. So here she is with her factory threaded barrel and suppressor height sights: http://i.imgur.com/NiGpBBP.png Sweet ride I would hit it. |

I try to have a dozen or so magazines for each different model of handgun I own. I say "model of handgun" because I have six G19s... 72 magazines might be a little overkill. Then again, maybe not. |

Well there you go . The standard prices at Cabellas are not so hot but if you work all the deals (sounds like you did) it all works out . The Glock is a pretty good shooter as is , some of mine I have worked a bit on the trigger and some I have replaced sights. Been so long I couldn't even tell you what brand of stuff I have on them. I am a pretty simple guy and have enjoyed shooting them with the simple changes , some guys feel they have to put a bunch of stuff on them . I guess either way is ok but my suggestion is to run a bit of ammo thru it as is and get a feel for it. |

Ok I've ordered some Glock factory mags.
I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I'm already a little dissatisfied with the mag release. I have average sized hands (size L mechanix for reference). Not a big issue but I have to shift my grip a little more than I'd like to eject the mag. Any recommendations/suggestions on a replacement mag catch/release? |

I personally use the factory extended controls (slide and mag) |
