I have run through many of the Glock models but they have all been gen 2 or 3. I am trying to decide if i really need to try a gen 4? If so i think it will be a full-size 45. Are the gen 4's really that much better?

YES!

I have a G19 and G23 in Gen4 the texture alone for me was enough to push me into getting one.  The mag release also is a big improvement over the original.

I have a Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock 19.  Though the grip texture and mag release are nice, is it worth the premium? I am not quite sure. I shoot both with the same accuracy and on a off day low and left.  .  The only reason I still have the Gen 4 is because it's all FDE and not that ugly two tone.

Hmmmm like the idea of all FDE for something different. I am leaning more and more to a gen 4. It only took two posts. LOL

Figure it this way you get an extra mag, better texture, better mag release, the option for different grip size, and a better recoil spring (some day no difference but I can tell a difference with the different spring.  I own Gen2, 3, 4 and my favorite is 4 I want to eventually get a G34.4 and replace my G34.3 same with a G17 I have a Gen2 but want a 4.

I carry a 21SF...changing grip sizes doesn't matter because my hand doesn't change sizes from day to day. So I can't justify spending the coin right now..

I am liking the idea of carrying a G41 though....so maybe.....

The texture alone did it for me. I have small hands so I won't be using the backstraps, I still have to shift my grip to hit the mag release, and since I bought Blue Label, I would've gotten three mags anyway.

Yes; I sold my Gen 3 Glock 20 and replaced it with a Gen 4 Glock 20.  The grip texture alone is worth it for me....and the larger magazine release is a significant improvement for me.

google this word.

I'm actually preparing to pull the trigger on a fullsize gen 4 G21 as well.  The way I see it, the RTF, the extra mag, the larger mag release, and the backstrap options sold me over the Gen 3, in that order.  I really didn't want to have to stipple or add grip tape to my gun.

The issues with the recoil spring assemblies have been ironed out or so I understand.  If it worries you, you can always put in an aftermarket single-spring RSA

For me it was a no brainer. The original "tang" on the pistols made shooting a Glock torture for me as the slide would ride over the webbing of my hand. I tried all of the add on parts to no avail. I had given up on Glocks for a long time until the Gen 4 came around with added back straps. They made a world of difference for me.

I have a Gen4 21 try it you wont be sorry also have a couple other Gen4s that are very nice as well, give them a whirl that's part of the fun.

How have you lived this long without a Gen4?

I felt the same, but came across a deal on a gen 4 32 and it is quite nicely setup. Mag release is waaaaaay better and the new recoil spring makes them more comfy to shoot. I'd buy another.

Love my Gen 4's.  The texture is better and the ability to change out backstraps is great.

The short answer is yes, but honestly you're over thinking it.  Go pick one up at a gun store and fingerbang it for a few minutes.  If you like it, buy one.  If you don't, buy a 2nd/3rd gen.

They've got some good things going for them...

Better texture on the grips
Smaller grip diameter when not using a backstrap, and the size is adjustable.
3 mags in the box.

Some of the other improvements....not so great.

The larger (larger surface area) mag release sits rather flush with the frame...so much so that if you're not using the front of it that it can prevent it from traveling far enough to release the mag.  It's easily rectified with a $4 glock factory extended mag release.  Not sure if this is a problem on the .45 models, but it was to me on the 9s.
The dual stage RSA is meh.  I can't tell a huge difference between it and the Gen3s on the 9s.  It may mean something with a bigger round like the .40 or .45.

Gen3s seem to have a bit better aftermarket support in the ways of magwells, slides, etc...if that's your thing.

I tend to do this as well, overthink purchases, I will sometimes obsess for weeks about a potential purchase, bottom line is if you want it and can afford it then why not, its supposed to be fun.

I think so, the grip on the gen4 feels better in my hand.

Need is a strong word. That said, I don't plan on buying anything but Gen4 or newer from here on out because I think they were such a large improvement over the previous Generations.

The grip texture is what did it for me. The larger mag release sealed the deal.

Im new to Glock, but handled a G26 gen 3 & gen 4 back to back,,there is a difference, I really like the gen 4 over the 3, cant say why exactly , it just felt better. GOnna get the Gen 4 this weekend.

If you're talking about the G21, then yes for the Gen4.  I used to own a Gen3 G21 (non-SF model).  While it was a sweet, soft-shooting pistol, with my small hands, hayzhus the grip felt like a ginormous 2x4.

I now own a Gen4 G21.  While it is still the softest shooting .45ACP pistol in the universe, I feel like I am actually gripping the gun, versus just hanging on for dear life like before with the Gen3.

I find the gen4 with grooves removed to be most excellent.

I have a Gen 2 G23 and a Gen 3 G27.

Over the past year I had been thinking about a G29.

I handled both the Gen 3 and Gen 4 G29 models.

I guess for me it came down to what I have been used to so I ordered the Gen 3.

For some reason the Gen 4 did not feel right to me.

As others have said, take your time and handle both.

See if your local range has different Generations you can rent/try.

I have a gen3 23 and was plotting to switch to m&p's. Then I held a gen4 19 with no backstraps on. I now own a gen4 19, and no m&p's.

I stumbled on this thread while looking for gen 4 - G23 info related to reliability issues. Without reading past first post in this thread I'll say my gen 4 reliably jams 2-3 rounds per 50 round box, so I'm going to advise OP to stay away from the gen 4. They are crap! No matter how great a gun is, if yours is F,ing up it's "crap".

Seriously though, when I buy glocks I just assume every one will be uber reliable. Likely I just got a lemon. FTEs, FTFs. 3 different kinds of brass cased ammo. Not a confidence builder. I have a half dozen other gen 2 & 3 glocks and really can't recall having any issues with any of them. All AK reliable but more accurate.

Anyway, hopefully in my research I'll find either a simple fix or whether I have to send my unreliable gen 4 turd back to the factory.

I love love love the grip on my G19 Gen 4. I'll probably never own a Gen3 because the grip is so nice. Not only the texture, but I feel like it's a little more slim and fits my hands better. My brothers G21 Gen 3 feels like holding a brick by comparison.
