| I have run through many of the Glock models but they have all been gen 2 or 3. I am trying to decide if i really need to try a gen 4? If so i think it will be a full-size 45. Are the gen 4's really that much better? |

I have a Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock 19. Though the grip texture and mag release are nice, is it worth the premium? I am not quite sure. I shoot both with the same accuracy and on a off day low and left. |

Hmmmm like the idea of all FDE for something different. I am leaning more and more to a gen 4. It only took two posts. LOL Figure it this way you get an extra mag, better texture, better mag release, the option for different grip size, and a better recoil spring (some day no difference but I can tell a difference with the different spring. I own Gen2, 3, 4 and my favorite is 4 I want to eventually get a G34.4 and replace my G34.3 same with a G17 I have a Gen2 but want a 4. |

Are the gen 4's really that much better? google this word. I'm actually preparing to pull the trigger on a fullsize gen 4 G21 as well. The way I see it, the RTF, the extra mag, the larger mag release, and the backstrap options sold me over the Gen 3, in that order. I really didn't want to have to stipple or add grip tape to my gun. The issues with the recoil spring assemblies have been ironed out or so I understand. If it worries you, you can always put in an aftermarket single-spring RSA |
| For me it was a no brainer. The original "tang" on the pistols made shooting a Glock torture for me as the slide would ride over the webbing of my hand. I tried all of the add on parts to no avail. I had given up on Glocks for a long time until the Gen 4 came around with added back straps. They made a world of difference for me. |

They've got some good things going for them...
Better texture on the grips Smaller grip diameter when not using a backstrap, and the size is adjustable. 3 mags in the box. Some of the other improvements....not so great. The larger (larger surface area) mag release sits rather flush with the frame...so much so that if you're not using the front of it that it can prevent it from traveling far enough to release the mag. It's easily rectified with a $4 glock factory extended mag release. Not sure if this is a problem on the .45 models, but it was to me on the 9s. The dual stage RSA is meh. I can't tell a huge difference between it and the Gen3s on the 9s. It may mean something with a bigger round like the .40 or .45. Gen3s seem to have a bit better aftermarket support in the ways of magwells, slides, etc...if that's your thing. |

I tend to do this as well, overthink purchases, I will sometimes obsess for weeks about a potential purchase, bottom line is if you want it and can afford it then why not, its supposed to be fun. Quoted:
The short answer is yes, but honestly you're over thinking it. Go pick one up at a gun store and fingerbang it for a few minutes. If you like it, buy one. If you don't, buy a 2nd/3rd gen. |

Need is a strong word. That said, I don't plan on buying anything but Gen4 or newer from here on out because I think they were such a large improvement over the previous Generations. The grip texture is what did it for me. The larger mag release sealed the deal. |

If you're talking about the G21, then yes for the Gen4. I used to own a Gen3 G21 (non-SF model). While it was a sweet, soft-shooting pistol, with my small hands, hayzhus the grip felt like a ginormous 2x4.
I now own a Gen4 G21. While it is still the softest shooting .45ACP pistol in the universe, I feel like I am actually gripping the gun, versus just hanging on for dear life like before with the Gen3. |

I have a Gen 2 G23 and a Gen 3 G27. Over the past year I had been thinking about a G29. I handled both the Gen 3 and Gen 4 G29 models. I guess for me it came down to what I have been used to so I ordered the Gen 3. For some reason the Gen 4 did not feel right to me. As others have said, take your time and handle both. See if your local range has different Generations you can rent/try. |

Are the gen 4's really that much better? I stumbled on this thread while looking for gen 4 - G23 info related to reliability issues. Without reading past first post in this thread I'll say my gen 4 reliably jams 2-3 rounds per 50 round box, so I'm going to advise OP to stay away from the gen 4. They are crap! No matter how great a gun is, if yours is F,ing up it's "crap".
Seriously though, when I buy glocks I just assume every one will be uber reliable. Likely I just got a lemon. FTEs, FTFs. 3 different kinds of brass cased ammo. Not a confidence builder. I have a half dozen other gen 2 & 3 glocks and really can't recall having any issues with any of them. All AK reliable but more accurate. Anyway, hopefully in my research I'll find either a simple fix or whether I have to send my unreliable gen 4 turd back to the factory.
