My sons team all get new gen 4 G19 with nite sites and 3 mags and holster gear . He calls me tonight and was talking that his wont lock open on last round. The chief says its a new gun lets see what happens. I asked Zach was it with all 3 mags yes , ammo was Fed HST 124  . Does he need new slide lock  or just lube it up which he did not do yet ?????????????

Probably grip.

Change mags, lube well.

I'm guessing grip.  Thumb is probably riding the slide stop.

He needs to make sure his hand isn't interfering with the slide lock lever.  Big hands tend to crowd that area and can cause the lever fail engaging

  This.

Again, this.  Had the same problem, have it look at his grip and change slightly and it should fix the issue.

Have someone else shoot it and see if the problem persists.

As others mentioned, there are many causes to a problem, personally I see this being more common with folks. Grip plays a huge role especially where thumbs are located especially going from fs, c, sub frames.

Never had the problem with my full size, but with my sub compact I was having many failures to lock back with all my mags.  I thought it was the cold weather or weal springs but since I started making sure to avoid the slide stop lever I haven't had an issue

I agree - If your son is right handed, one easy way to test this is to have your son shoot it left handed. If it works that way, it's his right handed grip.

Good luck,

Whenever a problem like that develops first thing just shoot a couple mags one hand left handed(we should all practice weak hand right ?!)
If problem goes away you know it is a grip issue

Take the slide off an put an empty mag in the frame.... that should immediately show him if they slide stop is installed and positioned properly.

My thoughts too

Is anyone else concerned with the chief's response? Geez. Easiest way to check this is to unload the gun, put an empty mag in it, hold the gun with your trigger finger below the trigger guard to assure you hand has cleared all the controls, and then retract the slide with your other hand and see if it locks back.

I agree, pretty easy to trouble shoot this one. If slide stop is installed properly I.E. spring end not over the locking block pin it should engage with an empty mag.

Testimonial:

My friend I had have GEN 4 G23s and his slide would not lock back and we thought it was the cheap ammo he was using or limp-wresting so I grabbed his gun and held it as loose as possible and it would lock back with any ammo when I shot it. He grabbed mine and it did not lock back. So from being friends our entire lives, I made fun of how much of a p*s*y he was.

Once we were done laughing we quickly went back to the basic fundamentals and found out that he was trying to control recoil by pressing his strong hand thumb against the frame, which touched the slide release. (Does not help with recoil) He still cannot believe that he was doing something so silly that should be the last thing to think about at the level shooter that he is.

I had the same issue when we transitioned from Sigs to Glocks. My grip positioned my thumb to hold the slide stop down so it wouldn't lock back on the last shot-common problem. I run my thumbs a little lower now

I agree on the grip most likely being the issue.

PS: You should not lube a Glock in any place other than the contact points Glock recommends in the manual.  The striker channel needs to be kept dry as a bone.   I recommend using a a micro coat of a grease such as TWB 25 on the contact points.  Lube will do noting but collect dust and debris and can malfunction the weapon if left unchecked.
