[ARCHIVED THREAD] - G17 into G19L (Page 1 of 2)

Here's my new toy from Santa.

And it's about to go visit the plastic surgeon.

I've been carrying a G19 Gen4 for a while now, and its pretty good. So now I want a G19L.

A little in-progress picture. Choppy chop.

Rough test fitting of a loaded mag. Lines still needs final straightening. Magwell bevel and shorten to clear the mag.

Pretty much done with the cut. Edges dehoned. And made a custom grip adapter that replaced the Grip Force adapter, which looks cleaner than the former adapter.

G19L compare to a regular G19

What sights do you have on there?

Looks great!

Nice!

What did you use to make the cuts?

Frickin' Sweet! I gotta show this one to my Dad.

Good job.

You made it look like it came that way.  The 19L is sweet, IMHO.

Nice looking polymer-surgery.

Now go get a 17L slide for it and truly have a 19L.

You did a damn good job OP.

I'd love to get a 17 and do this, but I'm not sure I trust myself.

Thanks all. I love the way it balances now. Much better than the stock 19.

Thanks. Those are Dawson's Charger sight set. Front is matched with the rear, since its not standard 17 height.

Basic hand tools. Die grinder to rough cut away the extra areas. Hand files to straighten up lines. And various diamond files and sanding papers to smooth and polish up surfaces.

Wow, very nice.

Nice work, but why didn't you cut the whole grip? You have a G19 magazine, but the pistol will still print like a G17.

I may be wrong, but my guess is so that the magazine base would sit recessed in the grip rather than sticking out the bottom like a normal 19 does (comparrison pic).  It looks cleaner that way to me.

OP, like it.  You made it look like it came that way!

I see lots of transfermations on here that look good.  Make me wish I had the nerve to start cutting away at mine sometime.

Yeah, I get that. It does look very nice. However, the point of chopping a 17 is to get a pistol with a shorter grip. He now has less capacity with the same length grip.

It actually doesn't print like a stock G17. Since the whole grip was chopped, and not just a mag base slot.

Here's a look of the chopped grip with the medium backstrap added to the back. This shows how much of the grip was chopped, in addition to the backstrap area. Also, the stock G17, the mag base overhangs on the bottom of the grip frame, therefore there's even an added length to the stock G17.

I stand corrected. I still would have chopped it all the way down myself.

Yes, it would work, 17L/24 slide will work on a 17's frame.

There aren't any gen 4 17L's are there?  A gen 3 slide would technically work, but it's ugly.

That looks really nice good job. Ive said this in a bunch of threads but a glock commander would be my dream glock mod meaning a 17 frame 19 slide/barrel.

Thank you.

Here's what the 17 mag looks like in the gun.

Thanks all. Now it's even better with the hi-grip cut on the bottom of the trigger guard.

Stay tune for the magwell project for this G19L.

Really? I think it's pretty functional. You retain the sight radius while making it easier to conceal. That being said, I'm partial to a 19 chopped to 26 dimensions.

I own a 34, 17, 19 and 26.  I can shoot them all with comparable accuracy to the other.  While the extra half inch of sight radius may make the gun more accurate in theory, practically there is just not much difference to me.

I'd rather have a stock 19 then get after a 17 with dremels and files, but once again, it ain't my gun, and ain't my money,

That's a stock kit from Hera Arms: Glock Carbine Conversion. I think it's been discontinued by them.

I can shoot them all equally when I'm shooting slowly and trying to shoot tiny (well, not as large) groups, but when I start shooting fast such as IDPA/USPSA or practicing for self defense, I find that I make better hits in less time with the longer sight radius.  When I'm pushing to go fast and my sight picture might not be just perfect, the longer sight radius is more forgiving in my experience.

I did the same modification to my od gen 3 and it does make a very noticable difference in the way it carry's/conceals. looks good. the gen 4's look a little easier to perform than the gen 3.

I didn't have the heart to cut a Glock frame so I put a 34 upper on one of my 19 lowers and now have a 19XL. Nice job man. Never will be a fan of the Gen 4's but that's just personal . The Gen 3 grip feels like it was made for my hands.  I did mine simply to make it easier to carry a 34 IWB concealed.
