I'm taking a defensive pistol class.  Some of the shooting will be out to about 35 feet.  Will the Glock 17 be noticeably more accurate than the 19, at that distance?  I own a 19, and have the option to rent a 17 for the class.

No.  Both are capable 100+ yard pistols though.

I would think the 19 would be more accurate considering you have already shot it and know how it feels in your hands.
Some people don't like the 17.  It does feel different than the 19.
 I like the 17 better.

But both can easily accomplish what you're going to do in that class.

I was in your same boat OP, but went with my 19 since I own it I minus well train with it.

On the other hand if I had a 17 I would have taken it instead Cause I like the way it feels vs the 19. YMMV.

train with what you carry

The 17 is easier to shoot accurately than the G19, but neither are any more or less inherently accurate than the other.  This being a class setting will magnify any problems in your technique anyways, so it is probably a good thing.

But to your point, the entire reason of rocking the Glock, is that you should be able to transfer skills from a G21, to a G23, to a G26 and everything in between with relative ease, so you should bennefit from either one.

Which one has the trigger you press best?  That's the one.

For me it's my G19 over the G17.

Good comments.  If I was honest, I'd admit that I'm probably looking for an excuse to buy a new 17.  I'll rent one at the local range first.  A 17 looks and feels like something I don't want to carry around all day - but if I can shoot easier or better with it, I'll probably have to get one.  However, the 19 is really comfortable in every way.

I've owned a 17 and ended up selling it because I never shot it.  My hands just aren't big enough to get used to the longer grip.

I also own two 19's and shoot them more than any gun I own.

If you're just looking for an excuse to buy another gun, don't let us talk you out of it.

Since you have a 19, get a 34, there will be a bigger difference in between the two.

I have had a couple 17's and a long slide 35. All are gone but the 19 remains- all my sigs berettas and other 9mm are gone. I simply like the 19 best at all ranges inside say 50 yards you won't notice any performance difference between the 17 and 19

Do you mean 35 yards?  35 feet isn't very far for a handgun.  I shoot my 17L significantly better than my 19, but I don't notice a difference between the 17 and the 19.  The sight radius is only 1/2" longer on the 17.  You'll be fine with your 19.

This, or a 17L.

The best is a 17 with a 19 grip, but shoot what you own.

I own both. I like shooting both. But train with what you would carry, I use the 19 for a defensive class. Either will serve you well.

FYI: I couldn't hit the side of a garbage truck at 35 feet so can't help you there

I have a 17, 19, 26, and 34.

The picks of the liter are the 19 and 34.

The 17 and 26 add no value to the basic design IMHO.

A 26 pocket carry is plenty valuable
Now i need a 19 to round out the gen 4 collection

I carry the 17 when I can.  If clothing doesn't permit I carry the 19 or the 26.  All are excellent guns and shoot equally as well for me. You don't need an excuse to get a 17, just get it.  You'll love it.  I would like to find a G34...

I have a 27, 19, 17, ,22, 34, and 21, and I agree with you.   The first 9mm (17) isn't used much more since I added the 34 and 19.   I either CCW the 19 or take the 34 shooting.    The 27 is good on occasion if I want to carry something smaller than the 19.

I love my 19 as an all round gun.  If I was going to get a bigger 9mm it would be a 34.

I shoot defensive pistol classes with my G34.   I CCW a G19.

I also have a 17... I use it for recreational shooting and dry practice.

35 feet is awfully close still. Even 35 yards is a reasonable distance to be able to score cosistent a and b zone hits with a 19. I don't think a 17 would make a $600 difference in your shooting.

At 25 yards it will for I.

There will be no practical difference in accuracy between the 17 and the 19.

I've taken advanced classes where there is shooting out to 100 yards plus very fast shooting plus weak hand only and laying on the ground, etc etc etc.

I've used both G19s and G17s in these classes and there was really no difference to speak of.

I wouldn't rent a 17 just for the class.

(35 feet is not very far, did you mean 35 yards?  35 yards is not far either)

I have a 17g4, g3's-19, 21, 22, 23.

The 19 is my fav with the 21 a close 2nd. Im not sure why but after I undercut the trigger guard on the 19 I shoot it the best.

I agree with everyone else if you have a 19 you dont need a 17. (unless you boss tells you he doesnt like his brand new G4-17 with night sights installed and will sell it to you for $500 and include all 6 mags he got)

I bet if you get a 17 you'll end up wondering what all the extra gun is for. I had a Sig 229 and shot a friends 226 and all I could think was "what's all the xtra size for?" A 34 is big enough to see a real difference, but only in fast paced competitons where speed matters because the extra long sight radius helps a lot. Shooting on line for qualification you won't see any difference between any of them. Personally I think that the 17 is of a waste because it's not as good as the 19 for carry and not as good as the 34 for competition.

You won't be disappointed in the 34.

I'm still on the hunt for a 17L and if I can ever find one, It's mine.

I've been thinking that I should probably pick one up if I come across it.  It's part of the 9mm line so why not right?  Can't have the 18 so I'll have to live with that one :)

yeah, there is no point in havinga 17 & a 19.  That would be like having a dish water blond & a strawberry blonde rather than having a blonde &  a red head.

The 34 conceals just as easy as the 17 unless maybe you carry IWB & are short
