I have a question about G17L?
Were they made in all 4 generations from G1 to G4? How do you tell if it's G1 vs. G2 vs. G3? Am I correct in my understanding that only the early ones 1980s G1 had cuts in the slide? Do G17L came with lighter 3.5lb trigger? What is the difference b/w G34 vs. G17L? Thanks. |

They all have the slot in the top front of the slide just like the 34 & 35. It's to releive some of the front end weight. The trigger is now called a 4.5 but it's still the same trigger that came in the others and still does also in the 34 & 35.
There is no Gen 4 (yet anyway) but the Gen 3's are still being made.. I have 2 gen 3's and dearly love them. |

What is the market value of Gen. 1, Gen. 2, and Gen. 3 G17L? Which one is the best shooter? Thanks for sharing your expertise. |

I believe that some early 17L's had a fully enclosed slide....no hole in the slide behind the front sight. Some were also made with ported barrels. I bought a gently used Gen2 17L (w/tupperware box, three mags, manual, and loader) last month at the Dallas Market hall show for $450. I believe it was a pretty good deal. Typically the Gen 2 17L go for $500+ on GunBroker. |
| 17l has a nominal 6 inch barrel- this did not fit in the "box" used to measure guns for some practical shooting sports (IDPA/IPSC) so they came out with the 34 which just barely fits the box. The idea was to get a pistol with the longest slide/sight radius possible that still woul be legal for those sports with size requirements. The 17L does interest me a little but unless I fall into a deal will probably just stick with my other 9's |
