Besides the guide rod and spring what other spare parts should a Glock owner keep on hand  ? What parts ( if any ) tend to wear out or break with normal use ?

You really dont need any to be honest. Depending on the model, it's recommended to replace the recoil spring everying 2.5k-5k rounds or something. Possibly the trigger springs if you're really concerned about them. But in all honesty, glocks are made to run. Parts don't really break on them. In fact I don't think I've ever seen something just up and break on one.

I have seen guide rods melt a bit, but guess what, the gun still shot perfectly fine without it.

I keep a spare of every spring and the smallest parts because they're easy to lose. If I had to list an order of importance, I'd say:
1. Guide rod and spring
2. Trigger spring
3. Slide lock spring
4. Firing pin safety spring
5. Extractor depressor plunger spring
6. Spring loaded bearing
7. Firing pin spring cups
8. Trigger housing pin
9. Trigger pin and locking block pin
10. Magazine catch spring and firing pin spring

And of course it does no good to have any of those parts unless you have a 3/32 inch punch like the Glock Armorer's Tool to detail strip the gun.

It should be noted that Gen4 G19's and G23's use their own unique slide lock spring, so far you can only get that spring from glockparts.com
