Guys,
help me out please. I searched this forum but couldn't find this question being asked. I'm considering my first Glock. I currently have a Beretta 92Fs and a Colt 1991. I would like a 9mm Glock to round out my collection. Which is the 'preferred' Glock? G17 or G19? Thanks for your suggestions. Alan |

Since you are limited to 10 rds (CA law), go with the 19. If you ever decide to and are able to CCW, you will appreciate the smaller size of the 19. Conversely, if all you ever plan to do is shoot targets, get the 17 or a 17L or a 34. They will all have a longer sight radius than the 19. 17<34<17L
Now that I think about it, why are you not considering the G26? 10 rds and nice and small. |

My wife has her CCW and she started with a G19 and then went to the G26 because it was easier to CCW. Go with the 19, you won't regret it. It is the best of the Glock 9mm world in my opinion.
Are there ranges near you that rent them? Go shoot all 3 and see which you like best. |

I'll drop by again this week and see if they have both. I do remember at the time that it felt so good in my hands (I was shooting the 92FS at the time) and it was easier to shoot more accurately with, than the 92FS. |

On paper, the G19 is the one to get because it has almost the same capacity as the G17 (15vs 17rds) but it's more CCW friendly then the 17 due to its compact size and the G19 and takes both G19 and G17 mags.
That said, you need to try both. The G19 and G17 do not fit the same. The difference in grip is small but enough that you may find you shoot one much better then the other? I know for me the G17 fit's 10x better then the G19 and because of that, I shoot the G17 much better. As far as the over all size goes, while the G19's size is more CCW friendly, there are hundreds if not thousands of people who CCW either the G17 or G34 daily. |

I hate to say it, but I might end up some day getting all three (17/19/26). They all have a purpose. So maybe I'll start with the 17 and get use to shooting accurately with it, then I'll move down to the 19, etc. I'm picking up the 17 this week. It'll be my first glock and 9mm. Woot! |

I am, and probably always will be a 1911 guy, but I recently picked up a G19 for daily carry. I was comparing the size of the 17 and the 19, and for concealed carry the 19 fit me much better than the 17. I know that holsters will make a big difference when it comes to carry, and I am lucky enough to have a friend that has a Crossbreed holster for his 19. I tried on his holster, and within a few minutes, I ordered one for myself. Great fit, and keeps the gun tight to the body.
I know I drifted off topic there, but if you are looking to carry, a holster makes as big a difference as what kind of weapon you are carrying. Just my $.02 of course. Ron |

Alan Look...don't look for your answer online.....go down to a gun shop, and put your hands on both models, and then make your decision. I was in your same situation long time ago, went down to a shop and put my hands on a 19 and found out it was to small for me...so I bought the 17. Years later I bought a 19...go figure!

I'm in total agreement. Even though I have girly hands, the 17 fits me better, IMO. I also own both (17/19) Quoted: On paper, the G19 is the one to get because it has almost the same capacity as the G17 (15vs 17rds) but it's more CCW friendly then the 17 due to its compact size and the G19 and takes both G19 and G17 mags. With these types of questions my standard answer is to get the largest gun that you can for reduced recoil and increased sight radius but somehow that isn't the best answer for the Glock line
Don't get me wrong, the 17 is a fine gun and a beautiful shooter. Not at all a bad choice. I regularily attend a steel plate match at my club, shooting steel plates can be very instructive as to what gun "works" for you. Not a dificult target but when you get the time presure of somebody trying to beat you the whole game changes and small differences in guns make a huge difference in personal results. At my club Glocks are quite popular and you do see some 17s and 34s but the majority of them are 19s. For many folks they just seem to work best. Many of the folks shooting the 19 also own a longer Glock but the 19 seems to work best. You can't really go wrong with the 17 or 19 but shoot both if you can only get one |

Bought it for CCW. 17 fits my hand better than a 26 or a 19, but my shorts and tshirt habit in the summer sure makes it easier to carry a 26 in a MTAC or in a cargo pocket. Cargo pocket carry for me requires this. Without the string attached. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa364/gaonofre/VanGuard1.jpg Why no string? Isn't there a eyelet in your cargo pocket to attach it? |

Thanks, guys. I'll drop by Grant's Guns in Costa Mesa tomorrow to check it out. By the way, is the Gen 4 an option or is it supposed to be the only way you can get a brand new Glock. Alan Gen3 models are still in production so you should have no problem locating one. The Gen4 is also an option if you find that you like the new frame texture and enlarged and reversible magazine catch. As to the 17 or 19… well only you can decide that. Get to your local fun shop and handle both. Then decide. Personally, I like the feel of the 17 better, but my go-to CCW is a Glock 19. The Glock 19 is a great all around pistol, but if concealed carry is not a consideration you might want to get a 17 first. I say first because more Glocks will follow… trust me. Good luck! |

Guys,
I felt both the G17/G19 at Grant's Guns today in Costa Mesa and the G17 felt better in my hands. I went ahead and ordered it and it should be in, in a couple of days. By the way, apparently the Gen4 is not allowed in California? So I will be getting the Gen3. Thanks for all your help. Alan |

Alan California DOJ changed the requirements for a handgun to make it onto the approved list [Yet again!] And since Glocks don't include a magazine disconnect, and likely never will, they aren't up to the standards to be sold in this state. However there are exceptions to that rule. The LEO exemption for example, or you can find a dealer that does a Single Shot conversion, and you can bring one into the state that way, and after it's converted and sold to you, just ask for the factory parts back, replace them in the weapon, and you're all set. |
