I found a Gen 1 G19 in a somewhat local gun shop today. It had a finger groove sleeve on it and the shop proprietor thought that it was a Gen 2. It is my understanding that a Gen 1 G 19 is something of a rarity. Is that true?  If it is, what is a fair price for it?

Chances of you actually finding a TRUE gen 1 G 19 is close to slim and none.  Rare is not the case.  Super rare is more like it

Does it have checkering on the front strap? If it does then it is a Gen 2.

Seems like it had straight serrations, but I did not pay close attention to that. I saw that it did not have finger grooves, did not have a light rail, and only 1 pin above the trigger well. It is my understanding that Gen 2 and later had two pins above the trigger well.

The Gen 2 9mm's as well as Gen 3 9mm's until 2002 or so only had one pin above the trigger. I'm betting what you saw was a Gen 2 G19 since you desribed "serrations" on the grip frame. The Gen 1 has no serrations/checkering on the grip frame.

I don't remember exactly what I saw on the front strap, but I do know that it wasn't smooth. Thanks for the info.

A GEN1 19 would fetch well into the thousands on an auction site.

Now I feel like a schmuck. I quietly told the shop proprietor that he may have a rare pistol worth much more than he had it tagged. He pulled it from the case and said that he would do a little research. Now I know he was just placating me so that he wouldn't have to listen to my goofiness anymore. One of these days I WILL learn to keep my mouth shut.

A Gen1 would have a smooth "pebble-like" texturing all the way around the grip. A Gen2 would have serrations on the frontstrap and backstrap.

i bought a gen 2 from my neighbor yesterday. he had done a stippling job on the frame <not a bad one>. it was his LE backup pistol for many years and shows some holster wear. i gave him 350.00 for it. he would have taken 275 but he needed the money and i wanted to help him out the best i could.
