Ok, so i have read the numerous threads on the glock 23 "limp wrist" issue. I have a gen 3 23 that has had problems both with a light and without. What is the general consensus on what spring to replace. I think id like to try to replace the mag springs before i send it off to glock. I dont think i am limping it because i have had several people shooti it and the problem is replicable.
What is a good mag spring replacement? and what other springs should i try replacing? |

Quoted: ftf (feed), theres maybee 1000 rounds through the pistol. all stock parts. Are you stuck with 10 round magazines? If not, try calling Glock and have them send you the upgraded mag springs and follower. If you are stuck with 10 round magazines, you're stuck on the follower, but might still be able to replace the mag springs. |

i think we can rule out the ammo, i use the same ammo in three dirffent guns without hickups and like i said im using three diffrent types of ammo.
i have the hi cap mags. i have a bunch of mags, i guess il have to start marking the mags it happens in. but i dont see how the mag springs can be bad already, they are relativly new. |

Like I said, I've had the same issue just recently. I've had my G23 for 10 years. My G27 Gen 4 is new. Never had issues with either until the last 3 timews I went out. Fed 180 gr. Walmart and Magtech 180 gr. range ammo both had failure to feed. The slide doesn't come back far enough to strip the round. Dave N |

I know you don't think it's the ammo, but for what it's worth, my G23 does not like Georgia Arms reloads (180 OR 165 grain). I get all kinds of malfunctions; stovepipes, FTE, and FTF.
Too bad, too, b/c I bought a LOT of it.
edit: but one of the employees at the range says his Glock runs through Georgia Arms .40 with no problems. |

I own several G23s and carry the gun for work (plain clothes LEO)
The G23 would be my #1 choice for all purpose self defense gun. I've owned and shot competition with most of the H&K, Sig, SW, Beretta, etc offerings. I still own several custom built 1911s but for me the G23 is it. The only exception is in the winter time when I can hide a larger gun I often use a G21 |

Dave N I had the exact same issue with my Glock 23 Gen3 RTF2 specifically with the Federal redbox 180gr ammo. All types of other ammo ran fine. Interestingly the redbox ran fine in my Gen4 Glock 22. |

Isolate the FTF's to particular magazines. If all of your magazines give you FTF, try a new factory weight guide rod spring first. Factory weight for the Gen3 G23 is 18lbs. 15lbs is WAY light, you may have FTF just because of using that. Not to mention, if you're running standard power .40SW loads with a 15lbs spring your frame will get battered a lot more. The recoil buffer is generally not that useful, but I wouldn't run a light spring with standard loads unless I was using one.
If the new guide rod spring doesn't fix it, get some Wolff +10%XP magazine springs. If those springs don't fix it, here's a modification you can do to your magazines to make them more reliable. I had consistent FTF with a brand new G23 magazine while all of my other magazines worked fine and I did this modification, now the magazine works flawlessly. In this picture you'll see the protrusion of plastic, aka "nub" under the left feed lip. That "nub" has absolutely no purpose, it can only act to inhibit feeding, you can grind it down or shave it off, or remove it entirely. If you look at the latest Gen4 .40 magazines, they've ground down that "nub" for this very reason. The "nub" under the right feed lip stops the follower from rising too high, but it may stick too far into the center of the magazine tube on the side and on the bottom of the "nub", so you can make these cuts to the "nub". The "old side view" is what the "nubs" looked like in the very first ambi-cut .40 magazines. The "new side view" is what the "nubs" look like in later ambi-cut .40 magazines. The "nub" shown on the magazine in the picture, you can remove that one entirely. The "nub" under the right feed lip(not visible in the picture) has the same profile and that's the one you can cut down, as shown in the "new shave" drawing in the picture. http://i51.tinypic.com/2a649he.jpg |

Well,
I've been seeing some of these lately. On a couple of things... The wal mart loads are for some reason...just not right...I can't verify but know a few people that have been getting wal mart federal and it's has been...not right.. I haven't taken any and did a full investigation into why... But im thinking of talking to some people I know over there and see if there is a walmart special build or lesser spec ammo...this may easily be the case... Federal is only like 20 miles from my house...so I'm just being lazy... But I will say throw a box of my cases of federal preminum hydra shock ammo that I get from factory...and the problem is gone...walmart ammo and it's back... Now I suggest going to a glocksmith if you can and have them lay eyes on it if you have one close. Else for what your experiencing...try different ammo...then send it in...might take bait to get back...but glock is usually good about makingnthe work proper again.. And as far as the mag mods...great post... As for springs...wolf is my suggestion... |
| so i put the 10% extra power mags from glockmiester into some mags and the gun worked 100%. i tried the 15lbs recoil spring too since i had bought it anyway and its still had no hicups. So the mag springs seem to be the issue. both recoil springs worked perfectly and honselty i cant tell that much of a diffrence between the stock 18lbs and the stainless 15lbs. strange that all my mag springs are bad on like 10 mags but whatever. i wont trust this glock for carry ill stick to my HK. i tried 4 diffrent types of ammo all good. |

Congrats.
It's not that your magazine springs were bad, Glock changed the magazines by adding those plastic protrusions under the feed lips which slow feeding. The stronger magazine springs simply power past that problem, but it's not a permanent solution. When the springs start getting weak, to about the same level as Glock's factory springs, the failures to feed will start happening again. If you start experiencing failures to feed again, the permanent solution is to remove the plastic protrusion pictured in my previous post, remove it entirely. And the protrusion under the right feed lip, shave according to the drawing in my previous post. The protrusion circled in the picture is the left one, that's the one you remove entirely. |
