I think it is the texture on the Gen 2 and 3 side panels?

That's correct. "Gen. 2" and "Gen. 3" weren't official Glock designations, but the standard texture on those pistols is/was RTF.

It's on the front and back straps.

OK, so the checkering pattern used on those pre-Gen 4 models is the "RTF"?
