I just got some Meprolights for my G19. The instructions say to use a punch to slide them on. I thought a glock sight tool was necessary or there could be damage to the sight?
Any experience? I just installed the front site, didn't Loc-tite it yet though... It's the rear site I'm worried about... |

There is no replacement for the right tools, but I found it to be quite easy do drift it in.
Wrap the slide in an old leather belt and clamp it in a vice. Old drifts out really easy. New goes in with a little more force. I used a brass punch with a plastic sliver to prevent transfer of the brass onto the sight. To center it, I used my dial calipers. A few little taps and all was well. So far, centered sights shoot perfectly straight. I had no reservations in doing this, but the xdm is another story. Lots of horror stories out there on those. |
| i installed TFOs on my Glock 19 almost 2 years ago. i did not use any special tools for the rear sight; just a hammer and a punch. take your time and you shouldn't have any issues. a sight pusher would make this task easier and definitely save some time, but unless you swap sights often, i don't think the dedicated tool is worth the money. the leather belt tip above is a brilliant idea. i used loc-tite on the front sight, i would recommend you do the same. good luck! |

I tried using a brass punch once.
Key word is once. Buy a sight tool*, or go to a gun shop that has one. * Skip the Glock factory sight pusher. My local FFL actually broke their factory sight tool trying to put on a rear Ameriglo sight. Ameriglo recommended me to use the MGW sight pusher. |
| I understand from a friend who is a certified Glock armorer, that the instructors only laugh at the tools, due to their fragile nature. Glock certainly didn't invent the dovetail sight, and literally thousands of sights have been replaced using the drift and hammer method. |

to those that bought a sight tool, how much did you pay for it and where did you purchase it? They're about $150 bucks. Lots of on-line gun places have them, Midway, Brownells, etc. The MGW can be found for under $100 if you look. Brownells is about $90 if you have an account. http://www.ombexpress.com/p_GA969.aspx |

I like doing my own work when possible and believe in using the right tool for the job so I have a sight pusher. I didn't want to have to buy a separate tool for each gun I own so I bought a universal sight tool
B&J Machine P500 That said, the reason most sight makers recommend against drifting sights in and out is because of the tritium. If you get too over-zealous with the punch, you can crack the tritium vials in the sights. In my case, I generally get rear sights without tritium (tritium in the rear sight is useless IMO) so in that case, there is nothing wrong with drifting in the rear sight. |
