I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with the Glock's with the EXO finish? I saw one and really liked the look of it, something different than the all black of the normal Glock? |
|
If you like the two tone finish then go for it. The metal is still tenifer treated with the nickel boron over top. Will give it more lubricity and easier cleaning.
ETA: Not that they need to be any eaiser to clean or more lubricity, but it's a benefit none the less. |

Does anyone know if they will EXO coat any Gen4s? [img]http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_big.gif[/img No, FailZero doesn't do work on customers firearms or parts. A very similiar process to EXO for a really good price is Cera-Plate. http://www.ccrrefinishing.com/info.htm They are running a special on Glock slides for $79. |
|
I decided to go ahead and pick it up, I really like the looks and can't really find anything bad about the EXO finish at this point. Paid $520 + tax so not really much more than I paid for my wife's Glock 19. Put maybe 100 rounds through it so far without any issues, I'll have to post some pics when I get a chance. |

Robar is running a special on their NP3plus this month and you can get the slide and all the internals in the frame done for $187.50 plus applicable tax and shippling. I just dropped my 21SF. NP3plus is far superior to the EXO finish providing impregnated teflon lubricity and boasting a 1000 hr salt spray rating. I have been coating my Glocks and rifles for years and I haven't found anything that matches it. They also do the trigger bar and striker, which with the teflon on telfon surface, feels like getting a trigger job.
Here is my coated 22C and my LWRC with NP3 Internals.

The EXO is Nickel Boron Nitride, which is harder on the Rockwell Scale than NP3plus. However, check out the corrossion resistance chart comparisons in the pdf above. The amazing thing is this is for a 1mil coating!!! NP3plus blows it away for corrossion resistance. Also, NP3plus has crazy adhesion properties and is very abrasion resistant, so while it might not be as hard, it should last much longer and the coating goes over the Tenifier, so the underlying metal provides the hardness anyway. EXO has the ceramic content and it is the hardness that makes it have a low friction coefficient. EXO also has a higher temp rating since the Teflon in NP3 will melt at 670 degF. I believe the Teflon is slicker. However, I doubt my Glock would ever get over 670 degrees and all that would happen is the Teflon would evaporate out of the Nickel. Coaters like the Nickel Boron because it goes on faster. NP3 takes longer to plate, slowing down production rates. I found this salt spray test to the ASTM method for another coater of Nickel Boron Nitride. EXO doesn't seem to have their coating salt spray tested. http://www.surfacetechnology.com/specs-25.html http://www.uctcoatings.com/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2010/06/EXO-Tech-Overview.pdf http://www.uctcoatings.com/capabilities/coatings/ The one thing I will say about Robar is they have been around for years. I joined the Tempe Police Department in 1991 and several officers had their Sig P220's coated. Robar has the track record and have proven their coatings in real world use. They definitely aren't the new kid on the block. By the way, I am NOT on their payroll. I am convinced they are both great coatings but if you already own a Glock and you want the extra protection and look, I believe Robar is the way to go. |

Damn that looks cool, I want one now. I wonder where I can find one, I called around here in Florida and so far no luck If you're close to Pensacola, call Academy Sports. They're carrying them. Thanks I live on Orlando so its a little ways away, I called them anyways and they have a Glock 26 EXO in stock. |

i'm liking what i see here... $79 and 2 week turnaround time. i think i may send out my LE trade-in Glock 21 that i picked up last year. the factory black finish is just about nonexistent on most of the slide and i think this would be a great option to bring this thing back to life. thanks for the link, SERT!! |

I've been looking for a Glock 19 EXO but haven't seen that many for sale recently. My local shop has two....I mean one.....just put the other on layaway. May go pick it up after work. Edited to add that I DID go pick it up after work. Hopefully heading to the range on Sunday. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v715/dissident74/010-1.jpg Nice pair. I just saw a few EXO's listed on GB. I'm debating between the G17 or G19. |

One of the sellers are GB had a bunch of G17 EXO's with standard sights for $515...not bad. |

I just joined this forum and I almost never say anything but........... FailZero / Exo is NOT Nickel Boron Nitride! It is nickel with boron 5% + in it. Not nickel with little particles boron in it which is would be NB nitride. Robar uses nickel with teflon. Which used the teflon particles to be lubricious. These particles do wear period. Nib is much hard Rc72+ and close on lubricious Cof .04. There is a BIG reason why Nickel Boron is the only finish that Glock has even allowed on thier guns. Simple it is better the both Robar and Ceraplate since it never wears off. The Cylinder & Slide Trident is Nickel Boron also and you can dump it in salt water for months and it will never rust. I have several personal Nib coated guns. FailZero stopped coated personal guns over a year ago. So I was out of luck until I found WMDGuns a month ago. I just got back my M4 parts and I had the barrel, upper, lower and BCG done. Sorry to step on toes but if you get a chance to shoot a gun with real Nib coating we will never shoot anything else! |

No toes stepped on. One question, have you shot a gun with NP3?? Also, cleaning carbon off an NP3 finish is like wiping eggs off a teflon skillet. How well does the FailZero finish clean up? I searched far and wide on the internet trying to find a salt spray test on the EXO coating but I could find no data anywhere. The only thing I found was a specification for nickel boron that said this... "1.7 The nickel boron coatings are microporous and offer limited corrosion protection. Their columnar structure, however, is beneficial in reducing wear because it provides a means of trapping lubricants within the surface of the coated part." Also, I have never observed an NP3 finish wear off. I have seen them polished due to holster rub but the coating is very much intact. I'm sure the EXO finish is a great finish and it is incredible hard, which is how it acheives the low friction. I just prefer NP3plus myself and like I said before, Robar has proven the test of time. |

All very good points and yes I have shoot several guns with NP3. Rob has done a great of promoting his finish and Robar has been on the market for some time and in every magazine. Plus Rob's photo work is tops in the gun world. I'm just pointing out that Nickel Boron coating is the future coating for firearms. Adding a small mil layer of (nickel something) is placed under the nickel boron and that will keep just about everything out. Several agencies have the salt spray reports but have not released them. You make some very good points but I also have the question " Have you ever shoot a gun coated in real Nickel Boron?" The TALO EXO Glock is a HUGE hit and they can not make them fast enough. I fact if you can visit the TALO site you will see a picture of a EXO Glock 23 with the special edition AmeriGlo night sights. That is a very special Glock to me because I own the gun you see in the pictures. I enjoyed the back and forth stuff. Nice to see pure love for something you believe in!! |
