whats new with this other than the backstraps???    worth the extra???   As far as backstraps go, I was always fine with the glock grip.

New is apparently a lot of things including the recoil spring, the cuts (or not) for the recoil spring in the slide, and internal parts to the trigger which increases the pull weight a bit.

Worth the extra? No.

Right now I wouldn't purchase a Gen 4 Glock, especially not the 9mm version. They are just having too many problems for me to take the risk of plopping money down on one. I like the interchangeable backstraps and that would help me with slide bite, but they're just too problematic right now. Glock is still futzing around with spring changes and slide configurations:

Does that inspire you with confidence that they've got the problem licked? Doesn't for me.

I'd stick with a Gen3 in 9mm.

I do not discount the issues being seen in the Gen4 models as I am getting reports from many people that I trust.  I also think highly of JW777 and his comments.

I will  move on to say, that with only my 3 samples of Gen4's that I own, I must be the luckiest Gen4 owner in existence as I am not having the issues that are commonly noted and it is safe to say that I have more than enough rounds through mine to make this claim.  For myself, the largest benefit to the Gen4 is the grip size and mag release button, or the relationship of my hand to them.  On my Gen3 Glocks I have to break my grip and roll my hand to reach the mag release which has always annoyed me.  On the Gen4's I do not need to do this.  Also without the added backstraps, I do like the overall feel of the pistol and the angle in which I seat my grip.

I will absolutely say that I now have almost 14K through my Gen4 G17 which is almost 1 year old and only within the last 1500 rounds or so, I have noticed that I am taking rounds off my head every now and again.  I have been wanting to run these stock parts as long as I could.

This is the original spring and extractor also from a PHH serial # weapon.  No recess on slide and no markings on the spring that I can detect.  Even when the pistol was newer.

Baby glocks have always had the captive springs, no changes from Gen3 to Gen 4. All reports so far say they are GTG. I've got a Gen 4 G27 and have had no issues. I do like the smaller grip and the new mag release but don't care for the heavier trigger pull. I see a new trigger bar in my future.

I love the new Gen 4s.  I have a 17 and she runs flawlessly.  I bought it mainly for the new RTF but the bigger mag release is nice and I look forward to the beaver tail back strap due out sometime soon.

Guess I'm one of the "lucky" ones as well. Both my Gen 4s work flawlessly.

I almost want to ban the use of the word "flawless" in discussions...

The Gen4 thing is really, really spotty. I know of some people who have had no trouble at all. I know of some people who have had nothing but trouble from the getgo. I know still others who never had any problem at all...until they put X thousand rounds downrange and then all of a sudden their gun started malfunctioning on them. In the last few days I've seen multiple instances of "I thought I was out of the danger zone!" from folks.

Example:

http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?571-Gen4-19-The-problems-have-started-....

It really does seem to be a crapshoot with no rhyme or reason to what guns work and why. I thought the problem was limited to the 9mm versions but now I'm hearing about similar problems with the .40 caliber versions as well.

My best advice would be this: If you are interested in buying a pistol that you can run through a bunch of rounds on the range like Surf does and you're willing to put up with potential headaches, then maybe the Gen4 is worth looking at. If, however, you need a gun that is going to run out of the box, stick to a 3rd gen 9mm. Your odds are just better that way.

Based on your chart, if I have a Gen 4 G17 without the recess in my slide, will any current G17 Gen 4 recoil spring work or do i need to find one that specifically mentions "without slide recess"?

Glock has been referring to springs by the number stamps on them...02, 03, 04, etc. The recommendations change, too...so were I you I would call Glock up and ask what spring they recommend for your gun.

Is the trigger pull actually heavier or is the trigger just not broken in yet like other Glocks you have already put rounds through?

It is actually heavier. I believe Glock started using the heavier trigger components even in recent production Gen3 guns as well.

I am also getting some negative feedback on .40's.  I also cant agree more with this statement quoted.  Just for the importance of the statement I will add to what JW is referencing.  I often get asked about my Gen4's and I always give this reply...."I have had very good luck with all of mine.  I know of many people who are not as lucky.  Right now I really can't completely suggest a Gen4 Glock.  I won't say don't get one, but be aware of potential issues."  Of course I will elaborate on issues being raised with these weapons if asked.

I will also add that when I purchased my Gen4 G17, there really wasn't a lot of consistent, or solid complaints surrounding them.  I purchased the weapon with the full intent to run it hard, with a lot of rounds in a short time frame.  I also ran a 3K round torture test on it without cleaning and lubing as was a topic on another site.  I also purchased my other Gen4's fully aware of the potential issues that I could face.  I readily admit that not one of these Glocks was purchased to be a "critical event" weapon.  I feel fully comfortable with them now after putting a lot of rounds out of them, but that was not my intent right out of the box.  Anyone purchasing one, had best give it a good vetting before relying on it for anything more than punching paper or banging steel.  FWIW - I supplied my mother and my wife each with Glocks for their own home / personal defense.  Both of those Glocks happen to be Gen 3's.

I don't know that I'd really say heavier components, the only thing I believe is different is the "bump" in the trigger bar that keeps the bar straight up and down at the end of the pull instead of allowing it to slip off of the side of the firing pin safety.

FWIW, I'm hoping to pick up a 4th Gen 27 when the local place gets the LEO priced ones in.    I'll have awhile to test it out before I carry it.

I just picked up a gen 3 G27. I was going to get a 4th gen but after holding them both one after the other, I personally didn't like the new mag release or grip texture so I passed. The gen 3 was cheaper anyways. Plus they didn't have any gen 4s with night sights.

I have a Gen 4 17. I got the Gen 4 so I could switch the mag release to the other side because I'm a lefty. I'm also using the larger back strap because I have long fingers.

So far, it has worked perfectly. I've put about 400 rounds through it.

Don't get too down on yourself quite yet.  I bought a Gen 4 G 19 towards the end of the summer and put about 1,500 rounds through it over a 3 day period.  I didn't have any hiccups but I am very particular about cleaning and lubrication after every day at the range.  I like the changes they made although I do not feel much of a difference in recoil.

FWIW, I've got about 600 rounds through my gen4 g19 with an 03 spring and haven't experienced any issues yet. I did call Glock to get them to send me an 04 spring though just to have in case it ever does have issues (still waiting to receive it though).

Before you hang your self, shoot the thing.  There are issues with some specimens, but not all.  In any case, a couple hundred rounds will usually solve any problems.

I have had a Gen 4 17 for about 11 months. The gun has about 3000 rounds through it, including a LAV 3 day carbine / handgun course. I have shot everything from Wolf - American Eagle through it without a hiccup. The only modification I made was to upgraded the recoil spring to a Glockmeister captured one.
I have arranged to trade the Gen 4 for a new Gen 3. I know the weapon runs great... But I don't trust it (completely)
That being said... I love the gun, but I need to trust it all the time.
Upon  complete dis-assembly of the weapon, I noticed substantial wear on the extractor. This, along with the "alleged" reliability issues... I am sad to say I am completing the trade this weekend.
