Has anyone added a steel guide rod or enhanced mag well?

I've got a G17 and a G34 that I'm considering modifying.  I'm not currently shooting any competition stuff but would like to try it in the future.

Yep. Better sights are about the only mod I'll do on mine.

What kind of competition shooting are you thinking of doing?  Several have certain mods that you can and cannot do depending on the competition/division you plan on shooting.

If you going to shoot competition, its best to leave it stock and shoot in the gssf amateur and USPSA production class.  G34 is used by many in comp and a great gun out of the box.  Spend the money on ammo and practice time.  Gssf is a great way to get started

Eta: sights are a good option to change legal in most production competitions.

I take every Glock pistol I get to Glock Inc. in Smyrna. I ask them to put a Glock 21 mag release  and a Glock Extended Slide Lever on it. I dremel the mag release down to the perfect fit for me. If I have the funds, I have them put Glock night Sights on for $60... I really like the Glock brand night sights!!!

I will do an extended slide stop, on Gen 3's bevel the edge of the magazine release, fiber optic sights on play guns, 3.5 connector w/standard spring and a polish job.  I also run magwells on a couple of my Glocks.  Other than that, I am set.

I have a Heavy Dawson Precision Magwell on my Glock 35, along with a Novak Tungsten guide rod.  I used Arredondo magazine extensions and have Warren sights, with fiberoptic front sight.  I have a Vanek Super Trigger and a Storm Lake barrel.  I have stippled the grip myself and removed the finger grooves.  I built this gun for limited use in USPSA.  I like the way it shoots, but really need to work up a load for it.

Sights are a must

Buttplug, Vickers mag release, and Vickers slide stop are optional.

That is all a glock needs

I like to make index points on the bottom of the trigger guard and in front of the take-down lever, it helps me place my hands in the same place every-time I bring the gun to the ready.

I will put a good set of sights on a Glock as well, based on what I have seen. It needs some tritium/fiber-optic (and some taller, metal sights for those folks who plan on using a can).

Maybe a threaded barrel for a can, or a bit of milling on the slide for an RMR, but other than that nothing I can think of needs changing.

The stock mag release and slide release are fine, and they are perfectly reliable with the factory recoil assembly. The trigger/connector is up to personal preference, but as for me personally, I like the stock 5.5lb connector and the factory trigger spring on a hard-use/service gun.

How hard is it to swap out sights on a Glock? And which ones would you recommend?

My local gunshop installed TruGlo night sights and the extended slide release on it.  Took them all of 10 minutes.

I'm taking the G17 to the range tomorrow.

The same shop does trigger jobs too.  I may try one on the G34 next.

I put steel guide rods in both my G19 and G27 and they have performed flawlessly for well over 2K rounds through the G19 and probably about 500 through the 27.

Maybe this should go in another post but what's the benefit of a steel guide rod?  In my 20 years of Glock ownership, I've never had one 'go bad'.

Check the class you want to shoot before you put a single part on there. The Glock as it sits is IDPA Stock Service Pistol and IPSC Production legal. As you ad parts it gets bumped up in class, a steel guide rod will put you in enhanced service pistol in IDPA as will a magwell, a magwell will bump you into Limited or Limited 10 in IPSC (USPSA) and you will be competing against 1911 double stacks. Not saying you can't win with a Glock in that class, a buddy of mine just cleaned house in Limited last Sunday taking first against a field of STI's with a G35 shooting minor but it makes competition a LOT tougher on a new guy.

For me, I just change sights and clean up the trigger and then buy a boat load of magazines. I have a 1911 for shooting the other classes.

Benefit of a guide rod, well ease of spring weight change and recoil reduction would be the two that come to the top of my head. I use a Jager captured poly rod so I can change spring weight and stay SSP legal. The factory springs will last a long time but 15k a year will eventually wear them out as well as they don't always cycle reliably with bunny fart loads and a 17lb recoil spring.

Steel or titanium guide rods or non-stock springs are unneeded in a defensive use glock.  Several of mine have nightsights.  Many have the extended take down bar.

If a Glock is fucking up, the first thing an armorer does is trash your aftermarket rod and springs and return it to stock.  It would be rare not to receive a stern lecture about this from the armorer afterward.

I also have butt plugs in most of them because I got them wholesale and was running out of other needed things to waste money on.

I did that way back when I still didn't know much about Glocks.  The idea of a plastic guide rod just left me feeling a bit "uneasy", mostly because I didn't have a lot of experience with glocks.  Now I'm at the point where I could pass the glock armorer's exam if it was put in front of me right now, and now I regard the mod as essentially useless.

However, I have not bothered to switch back, because both my glocks function perfectly.  At this point I have no desire to mess with a firearm that is functioning 100%.

I stick with night sights and a light. Maybe an extended slide release if I can get a good deal on one.

I just picked up a G35 to shoot limited. I've got it stippled, dawson FO front sight and Dawson rear sight. Also a KKM barrle. Its got  custom trigger job thats at 2 1/4 pound pull. I will be adding a Dawson Ice magwell next week. using the arredondo +5 extension

I shot a match with it on Sunday and was impressed with the performance.

I have a couple of Glocks and about the only worthwile additions I've found for them is the Factory exended slide stop, night sights, Factory 3.5# disconnector, and the Vickers Magazine release.

I tried to start a separate thread on this.

But..no luck so far with responses.

I have a Glock 19 and the trigger feels kind of "spongy" there is a lot of creep before it actually shoots. Can I get this adjusted for a more crisp trigger? Or is this just how Glocks are? My Glock 22 had some trigger work done on it and it felt heavier, but was a smoother and much more crisp pull.

I'm also thinking of swapping out the stock sights and the mag release, for a Vickers release.

Thoughts? Would appreciate your advice.

That's just how Glocks are. You could swap out the connector for a Ghost Rocket but I wouldn't bother. The only thing a Glock "needs" is a good set of sights. Personally I like the plastic butt plugs and put them in all mine but other than that you're just spending money you don't have to. For dedicated USPSA you can add all kinds of crap that is pretty much useless for anything other than competition but that's the only time Id even consider it. Other common mods and the reasons I don’t use them are as follows...

3.5# connector - I hate them. Not enough noticeable change in pull weight to make it worth it and slows reset.
Extended slide release - Used to love them until I fixed my grip now they are a pain and I find I accidentally engage them. Using a proper thumbs forward grip my big 'ol dick beaters pop it up under recoil.
Extended mag release - I'd never use one and prefer to turn the gun. Ditching a magazine should be a very deliberate thing and IMHO the extended releases just make it easier to drop a stick unintentionally.
