I went to visit a member of my family in jail and we had to check in everything that was on our person at the appointment window, and then had to pay for a storage locker to hold our stuff during our visit. I recommend either leaving it at home, or leaving it in your vehicle.

Johnny law get's that gun box, Joe public get's hand cuffs for bringing a weapon into a jail or prison.  At a minimum, leave it in your car.  If the car is subject to inspection leave it at home, it aint worth the bullshit you'll encounter.

In Arizona, if it's a STATE facility, they have to check your weapon, if it's Federal, best leave it in the car.
No idea about your state, might want to ask in your Home Town Forum.

Carry that gun into a police staion or jail and you'll get the shiny bracelets placed on you. Leave it in the car.

I'm all for CCW, but when in doubt in a situation like this, leave it in the car.

Your visit may wind up longer then desired, years longer.

no guns are allowed in the jail, not even LEO's can bring theirs in, leave it in the car. Most jails will make you empty out your pockets and go through a metal detector, leave it in the car, I don't think you will get shot up in visitation.

Leave it in the car if you have the option, LEO's get lock boxes when they bring people in the sally port... it's a pain in the ass no matter if you're Joe Public or Joe Cop.

Bad Ju Ju Leave it at home. You could be arrested and in TX it is a felony.

I would say it is highly dependant on state law and how the jail is designed/visits conducted. Leave it in the car the first trip and check out the setup. At my county jail you just go in the little lobby area phone the jailer and the visitation booths are right there in the same area. I have only been there for ltc or nfa reasons but never got checked for weapons.

If it is federal, don't even bring it on the property. It is a federal offense to even have it in your car.

While I agree, it is pretty natural to want to be armed in the proximity of so many criminals.

If you carry at Wally World, it makes little sense to not want to carry near or in a jail.

Are you asking this question to see how stupid people are?  Who is going to carry their pistol when they go visit someone in jail?  Please for the love of god and sweet little baby Juan, tell us this is a joke!

Look on the bright side.  If you bring your gun, you and your brother can share a cell, and he won't be lonely.

There is no restriction under NH state law covering carrying in prisons but I doubt there are procedures in place for secure storage of firearms belonging to visitors. Leave it at home or in the car.

The upside of that is he may get to spend more time w/ his brother.

Check out the laws of your state.  Pose the question in your HTF. Chances are there's a prison guard and/or cop in your HTF who can direct you to the applicable laws.

Im not looking to carry it with me round the prison just wasnt sure if i could check it and have it locked up.

But thanks for the advice i just left it at home. it was wierd i couldnt have anything in my pockets no keys no wallet no phone all so i could go into another room with visitors so we could talk through a phone with inmates on the other side of 2" thick plexiglass and steel I certainly dont understand that.

Just leave it in the car.
I highly doubt you'll get arrested if you try, like other drama queens might try to tell you. They'll likely remind you that you can't have it in here and to take it to the car.

4. Cop decides to be a nice guy and lets him go
5. Guy leaves
6. Hides gun in storm drain

I visited my son a couple months ago (he's 1350 miles away) and all I was allowed to have was my D.L., my vehicle key (KEY––-not keyS) and $20 in QUARTERS  (for the vending machines)...not even a wrist watch is allowed and they looked pretty closely at my leather belt and finally decided I could keep it on.

at my county sheriff's office complex, which includes the jail, there are large signs advising possession of any weapon is not permitted regardless of license.  only people permitted to be armed are po-po on official business.
