Ok admitedly I do not carry because of fear of prison and big guys named BUBBA (I live in Illinois and am civilian), but out of curiosity I must ask.  I am thinking about buying an XD, Kahr or possibly a short butt glock, with those guns all being DAO what would you do about cocking them. Would you:

1) Cock it when the need arose (I now not always the best practice)

2) put the small one in your pants and hope it doesn't go off in your pants (admitedly not always the best either)

3) or always carry on the belt and be very very careful

thanks in advance

cocked always with round in the chamber

carrying any other way the weapon is useless for 99.9% SD situations

striker fired weapons should be carried in OWB or IWB holster

Well, there's cocking, and then there's chambering.

With the guns you listed, there is no "cocking";  the very nature of DAO pistols mean that with every trigger pull the pistol first "cocks" the striker (action 1) and releases the striker (action 2).  A DAO pistol can't be "cocked".

With that being said, condition 1 is the preferred mode of carry.

"Excuse me, Mr. Robber, can you pretty please wait while I chamber my pistol?"

For SD, keep the gun ready to go.

If you want to carry in your pocket , carry a S&W 442 in a pocket holster and nothing else ever in your pocket with it...

well, first off i would carry LEGALLY.

i like condition 1 carry- round in the chamber, safety on, hammer back.  I carry a uspc 357 this way.  glocks or other striker-fired semi-autos are all round in the chamber.

you do need to get some training if you're worried about this.

An empty gun is a paper weight. Condition 1 with what every saftey the gun has. I prefer my G23, point and shoot (if needed.)

+1, get a good IWB holster that covers the trigger, keep a round in the chamber, obey the laws of firearm safety and get as much training as you can.  If your weapon is not ready to fight then it is no weapon at all.

I don't think the OP understand much... about firearms.

1.  Civilians CAN legally carry a handgun concealed if they live in a location that issues permits to do so.

2.  Do NOT carry without the proper permits.

3.  Get some TRAINING on the proper use and handling of your firearm BEFORE you carry it anywhere.

Proper training and knowledge will answer all of your questions.

get firearms training; learn your 4 rules to where its instinctive; always use a dedicated holster that covers the trigger guard area

This is what I would recommend as well. Training can get expensive but it is well well worth it!

Always carry a round in the chamber, you won't have any time to rack the slide when you need it. Remeber don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Always carry in a good holster.

1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2. Never point at anything you do not intent to shoot.
3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
4. Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire. (If applicable)
(5.) Know your target and what lies beyond it.

Have it ready or it is useless. Follow those rules and you'll be fine.

You realize that carrying a concealed gun in your pocket or waistband is a felony is a felony.  I would suggest an XD and carry in a fannypack which is the legal method.  Obviously the gun would be unloaded and you can carry the spare magazine in your backpocket.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they more of a "1.5 action", much like Glocks? That is, in that the striker is partially pre-cocked, but not fully cocked until the trigger is pulled.

If you have the time to observe a problem, discretely draw and chamber a round, you have time to (for lack of a less-overused word) disengage.

Self defense means OMFG this guy is charging me with a knife/bat/your mom and I need to draw-frontsite-fire and not think or worry about chambering...
