Came across this on the Xavier Thoughts Blog.  Thought it was worth sharing.

xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2008/05/concealed-carry-creed.html

The Concealed Carry Creed

My weapon is for the protection of my life and the lives of others. That is its sole purpose. It does not confer rights, responsibilities or authority greater than that of other citizens. It merely allows me to protect life.

I will seek never to have to use my weapon. If I can avoid conflict, I will. If I can resolve conflict, I will. If I can escape danger, I will. If I am forced to bring my weapon to bear and use it, I will.

I will acquire superior training with my weapon. It is not the weapon that saves lives, but my effective use of the weapon. I will ensure my training is sound, my knowledge is current, and my mind is prepared.

I will know, understand, and obey all laws and ordinances concerning my weapon no matter where I happen to be. Failure to do so harms all who seek to legally carry an effective means of self protection.

I will know and follow the Four Rules of safe gun handling. I am a member of a growing community that must foster and teach safe and responsible gun handling if the community is to survive.

I wrote this last night as I was biking. I thought it was time the gestalt of concealed carry was summarized to teach those new to it. I wanted to give something that could be memorized, learned and practiced, a creed that would be universal across states for concealed carriers everywhere.

Feel free to reprint and use this creed as you deem fit.

Corny?  Yeah, kind of.  But with the way a lot of people here claim they draw down once a week and their standard reply to any scenario is "open fire" I think some of the chairborne commandos here could learn a thing or two from this.  I know most people are just talking tough, but I wonder sometimes about some of the comments posted here and how some of the lurkers might take that advice.

Maybe, but the guy knows what he's talking about.  this is the guy from the "Incident at Walmart" that a lot of folks have read about.  No, not the blading, disengage, don't touch my weapon guy.  Xavier pulled his piece to defend against an attack  on him and his little kid in a parking lot at Walmart.

Here's a few thoughts of my own.

My weapon is for the protection of my life and the lives of others. That is its sole purpose. It does not confer rights, responsibilities or authority greater than that of other citizens. It merely allows me to protect life.

I disagree, my weapon is to defend my life and the lives of my loved ones.  Any adult who's made the decision to assign their protection to the police has to live, or not, with that choice.  I'm not the police nor do I intend to behave like them.  But I do care, so once I've secured the safety of myself and my loved ones, I'll call the police for them.  But I will NOT risk my life or the lives of my family or my freedom to protect an adult who's made the decision to wander through life with no means to protect themselves or their familiy.  Natural selection and all that rot.

And carrying a gun does most certainly confer responsibilities on you that non armed citizens don't have, such as keeping your weapon safely secured and out of the hands of children or non trained individuals.   Also, my property represents a portion of my life, try to take it and I may very well shoot you.

I will seek never to have to use my weapon. If I can avoid conflict, I will. If I can resolve conflict, I will. If I can escape danger, I will. If I am forced to bring my weapon to bear and use it, I will.

Sorry, again I must disagree.  Make me believe you are a serious threat, enter my house at night, try to enter my vehicle when I'm in it, etc , etc,  and I will blow you head clear off your shoulders.  I won't run, I won't try to escape, I won't cower, I won't threaten and I won't beg for my life, I'll simply kill you.  I will call 911,  but only after the threat has been dealt with, which probably means you're dead or in the process thereof.

I will acquire superior training with my weapon. It is not the weapon that saves lives, but my effective use of the weapon. I will ensure my training is sound, my knowledge is current, and my mind is prepared.

A big +1 , but sometimes, just the appearance of the weapon can save you.  But good training is a great thing and I highly recommend it to anyone.  Like the old saying goes, having a gun doesn't make you a gunfighter anymore than having a guitar makes you a musician.

I will know, understand, and obey all laws and ordinances concerning my weapon no matter where I happen to be. Failure to do so harms all who seek to legally carry an effective means of self protection.

<Insert CoC violation here>

I will know and follow the Four Rules of safe gun handling. I am a member of a growing community that must foster and teach safe and responsible gun handling if the community is to survive.

Another +1.  We specially need to track down the idiots that do idiotic things with guns and then post the video to youube, and teach them a.....lesson in proper gun handling.

Now that I think about it, I can sum up my CCW creed easily.  "Leave me and my family the fuck alone and you won't get shot".   Pretty simple, hey?
