I have rods/screws/fusions in my back. One leg is shorter than the other a little bit. I am in daily pain. I carry an m&p 9c in a comp tac mtac. Weight wise, it's great. I have a good belt. However, as the day goes on, my back wears out and it starts to hurt.
I am thinking of switching up carry methods/guns. It was no better with an m&p shield. I'm thinking I may have to pocket carry. Suggestions? I carry at about 4 or 5 oclock. |

Suspenders and wear your belt a little looser. I've got two friends who have rods in their backs and they both swear by suspenders. I also have some back issues. I use quality gear (Belt and holsters) and Perry suspenders. Love em'. Also gathering holsters to carry my Colt Defender OWB. Much more comfy with the right rig. |
| A cheap first alternative may be bigger pants. When I first started noticing a sore back at the end of the day, I also noticed that I had no soreness when I wore a particular pair of pants that just happened to be one size larger than I normally wear. As an experiment, I went out and bought another pair one size larger than normal and rotated between the two for a week. The result was no back pain at the end of each day carrying a G19 IWB. |

I have a Keltec P3AT and PF 9 both which get pocket carried often the PF9 is borderline too big, but the P3AT is perfect never even know it's there well until you need it that is. Ever tried sholder holstering with a good quality leather holster from Galco or Desantis preferably with wide shoulder straps?
If you don't like Keltecs, Ruger makes a copy. |

I have 4 bad discs, L3 through S1. The lower three have been fused. Scar tissue from the surgery and the additional pressure applied to the un-fused disc by the fused discs cause constant pain and make it difficult to carry at the belt level. I have pocket carried a S&W 642 or a Kahr PM9 for the last two years. If I feel the need for a higher level of security I slip a 1911 in my waistband Mexican carry or with a soft IWB clip-on. I must strictly limit the amount of time I carry the extra weight.
For the previous 15 years I carried a Glock 19 or 26 on my waistband using Glock's Sportsman holsters. I can no longer deal with that much pressure on my spine. Having a bad back sucks. |
