So I got back into town from being gone with my brother and his girlfriend. Turns out, the neighbors of their apartment stated several thug like mexicans had been in and out of the back yard. Both my brother and I have concealed carry permits, and each own several handguns. However, his girlfriend and her apartment-mate (Not really roomate, but w.e) are just shy of 21. They cannot carry, and we dont have enough guns for what we would like. We would like to have a gun in each of their cars, as they can legally carry only in their vehicle and on their property as young as 18, but then we wouldnt have enough guns to store in the house for each to have access to.
Im working on getting the roomie to go on a date with me, looks like it might be a range date :D Seriously though, Im thinking of picking up a used shotty from a local fun shop. We placed a motion light by the back door. BTW, one time while the brothers GF was in her room, one of them tapped the glass on her window. The neighbor (Not the one who reported to us, but the one on the other side) hires a ton of illegals for construction. Not quite sure what to do. Ive been doing a couple night patrols by the apartment, dropped by once, but am trying to not keep too much presence visible. Been considering buying a surveillance system, but we are college kids, so something under 100 that can hook up to a computer and record what happens would be awesome. We are also nursing a german shephard back to health, but with its broken hip needing surgery, its more of an alarm than a protection from a physical threat. Ideas, theories, security ideas? (BTW, lots of spending and another dog are out of the question. pet deposit only allows 1 animal, we already tried. Tight college budgets.) |

No way to seal off the perimeter somehow? My GF had a similar problem in an apartment she was in, they had a porch area type deal, but it was completely open. I went to home depot and got some wood, made stakes and used some of that fake Bambo type fence deal to close it off somewhat. Cost less than $20, although it was wasn't exactly secure, it at least hindered someone just randomly walking onto their porch. (unless they tore it down..etc, if someone goes to that extent then you already got problems).
Are the "thug" type people and the workers from next door one and the same or related? Maybe find out why they keep coming over? Using a chair or maybe shade to rest / break? Get a used cheapo shotty for them to keep in the apartment. Make sure they both know where it is. Teach them how to use it safely. Motion light is a good idea, maybe even get another, Try and get them to understand situational awareness. Tell them to pay attention when they leave the house, when they come home...etc. Have them do a round around the apartment before they leave, and before they go back inside. Tell them to not always come into the apartment via the same path, park in different spots..etc. Mix it up. Spend like 30 seconds observing the area of their apartment from a distance before approaching. Simple stuff, like making sure doors are locked when they leave and when they are home. Get them in the habit of locking the door when they walk out it AND after they walk in it. Give them each a blade to carry with them all the time (or if that is an issue). To keep it in their car, and just carry it back and fourth every time they go from the apartment to car and vise versa..etc Good luck! |

First, get them pepper spray. It's easier to use than a knife.

Before they get any kind of weapon, they need to know that the weapon is not magical, and it will only work properly if they do. They need to be ready to kill someone if a situation escalates that far, or else they're going to get the short end of the stick. Would ICE do anything about a phone call alerting them to the potential presence of illegals? Tell your friends to keep their heads on a swivel, and definitely get them some training and equipment. A shotgun might be a little much for most women. I know you said that you are all just college students, but you need the right equipment, whatever it costs (within reason, of course). |

To the poster below, they do have pepper spray and a couple guns in the house, and my brother stays there most of the time, but he has duties in school programs that he cannot always be there. There is a fence, but thats the thing, they seem to think its fine to just walk on in. If they do it while we are there, however, they will be told to leave, and if need be, told to leave at gunpoint. |

One night I heard the gate open and was instantly up and had my 870 in a guys face about 10 seconds after. We live in a college town and turns out it was a drunk who walked in the wrong gate. but I installed a motion light where the original porch light was. it has happened a couple more times, but they leave the second that light comes on and they see theyr in the wrong place. the best thing I did recently was the most simple though, a padlock on the gate latch! criminals/thugs/burglars are like animals, they take the path of least resistance. If someones looking to steal, they will pass on to an unlocked gate. Also, beware of dog signs work wonders. Thugs don't like dogs |
