Hi.

I have NY and PA permits, neither of which are recognized by Ohio.

Then I read that Ohio is a traditional open carry state.

Then I read that you can't open carry in a car unless you're an Ohio concealed carry holder.

The gist is, I have to travel through Ohio to Michigan.  Michigan honors my permit.

I know we have 926A to cover transport:

Sec. 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle:Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

...but are there any other options?  The Ohio law is a bit murky as soon as it comes to either open carry or car carry.

Ohio basically considers the vehicle itself as the "concealing object", the same as a jacket or cover garment.  Therefore, there really is no legal way for you to have a loaded handgun in the car with you in Ohio, in fact, newer badly written law says you can't even have  loaded magazines with the unloaded firearm, the ammo must be separate.

Your only good legal option is to unload, empty mags, and store everything either in a case of some kind or in plain sight with the action open and out of your reach.

How soon will you make this drive?

Have you considered getting a Florida Non-resident permit? It would expand the number of states that you could carry in.

Any of you guys have experience getting Florida or Utah?  What qualifies you for either?  Like, what's the minimum qualification you have to take to get Florida?

I do not have any personal experience, but here is Florida's website:

I'm an Indiana resident with an Indiana lifetime Carry Handgun License.
I travel into Ohio a couple times a year on business.  Ohio does not recognize my IN permit.
Long story short, there was a Utah Nonresident class a year ago July I took.  Six weeks later I had my Utah permit and could carry into Ohio (and Minnesota which really was the primary reason as the wife and I like to vacation there.)

This past Wednesday was one of my trips into Ohio.  I had to remove my trunk gun (UF AK with seven 30-round mags of 7.62x39 JHPs) and I had my S&W 442 in the center console.  Look into the FL or the UT nonresident permits and you'll be much more comfortable driving through OH.
