Anyone have a link to a inexpensive, compact ( Springfield XD 3" or HK USPc ) size lock box that can be mounted in the car for times when I am REQUIRED to leave my CCW in the car? Any info would be great. Thanks

I got a 10 dollar Brinks lock box from walmart. I pulled up the carpet in my trunk and found a bolt, cut a hole for the bolt in the carpet, and drilled a hole in the lockbox then bolted it in. I finished it off with some thin foam rubber type padding from a craft store. So for like 15 bucks I have a padded lockbox with a key. Works fine for me!

I could see a single gun touchpad safe working for that. I know I have a gun parts/supplies rag with a link to it around here somewhere. You could browse gunbroker and probably see the same or similar at a good price.

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE!
I'm with Perfectforce on this.

I purchased a Brinks lockbox and drilled holes in it.

I have a gun cable lock attaches behind my seat and to my 'seatpost' in my vehicle.
In the lockbox, I originally threaded another cable through the holes, locking inside the box.
The box can be slid under my seat to be out of view.

Then, I either use ANOTHER cablelock (the thin cable ones) to route through the trigger guard.

I recently got the equipment to swage my own cables with loops on the end and I fixed a new coated cable to the box permanently.
The advantage of making my own cables is that I was able to make one long enough so I could place the box in a position where I could discretely remove the firearm and not place myself in an awkward or unsafe position while doing so.
I still use the cablelock to my seat and one inside for the firearm.
I'm not worried about the cable 'accidently' moving the trigger back enough to fire the gun especially if it isn't cocked and ready to fire.

My wife's car has metal hoops attached to the body for securing loads and I use these when driving her car and transporting  a handgun-in-a-box.

I went back home recently due to a family member being in the hospital.
Since my CCW was good in that state, I carried all the time.
But, since that state forbids the carrying of firearms into hospitals and they also have metal detectors at the doors, I used my lockbox to secure my firearm.
I would never be comfortable leaving my gun in an insecure compartment such as a glovebox, armrest, etc.

This box is solid enough that someone would have to work fairly hard at getting the box loose from the vehicle or getting the gun loose from the box.
And I don't think they would be able to do it without expending more time than a criminal wants and also incurring lots of activity to do so.

See I knew we weren't so different WSmac

But then again I don't use my box if I have a chance to step on some property owner's rights! LOL I'm just kidding. Maybe

AHA!
BUT, you DO carry your ammo in a seperate locked container when leaving your own private property don't you?

Oh...never mind...you probably don't live in one of those states like California

I have lined my box with some thin plastic shipping wrap so my guns don't scrape around inside.

btw, PF nice to see folks with a sense of humor around here

Well, i went with the Brinks box, but I got two differnt sizes. One is permenantly attached in the trunk and is the larger size. i then got a what looks to be 6 by 6 inch one and padded it, made the cutout in the foam for my XD9 3" and use it in the passenger compartment or if i need to ride in someone elses car, i just take it with me. 99% of the time my handgun is on my hip in plain sight but for the times I cant take it in, at least i have a storage box....

don't you think cables would be too easily defeated in case of a break in?

Depends on what type of tools the criminal is carrying.

I'm not sure an individual breaking in for the stereo or other easily carried items will;
1) be carrying tools that can defeat wire rope
2) be willing to spend the time sitting in my truck/car in a public parking lot cutting through the box or cable

If I know I'm going to be parked all day somewhere and be inside a place where I am not allowed to carry, I'll probably not bring the firearm.
Depends on the circumstances.

This is actually a very good point. I drive a pickup and sometimes find myself on military bases where it's not illegal to have my handgun, but I have to secure the pistol and ammo in different locked locations. In a pickup I don't have the luxury of a trunk or hatch, so a lock box under the seat is the only way I can seperate the weapon and ammo for transport. Same thing goes for my peacable transport through the PR of NYC.

Just so'z you know,
I was pickin' on Perfectforce a tad bit

Could you also just put your ammo in the glovebox?

Probably. I think that as long as the pistol is locked up, they aren't worried about the ammo.

Two things...
First..."the PR of NYC"? Whatcha mean by that?
Second...NYC doesn't support "peacable transport" -locked, disassembled, torched in half..... from what I know. You know something different? If you do -please share -as I have to drive into my old neighborhood every month to see my family. Hate either leaving it at home or ...

S&W has an excellent touchpad safe box that you can buy extra locking bases for so you can move it from house to car or ???? Can only remove it from the base when it is open and it is padded and has a key back-up. Buttons light up indiglo blue when pushed for nighttimeuse. Go to S&W's site to see it. It's about $150
