I'm about to purchase a mini-Draco next week...  I'm also wanting rails on the handguard.  Does anyone make these or is it more of a DIY process?!!?  Are mini-Dracos these more/less problematic than a regular Draco?  I'm reading alot about taps & dies and rivets too.  Whats the skinny on these things?  Thanks

Based on very informal evidence from gun forums, the Minis seem to be less reliable than the fullsize Draco....but are still decently reliable.  The fullsizes seem to be your typical, runs 100% on any ammo AK.

Rails are all DIY...there are none specifically for the Mini....but if you have a dremel tool, coping saw, cut off wheel, etc, it's pretty simple to get one to fit.

Not sure what you mean by taps/dies/rivets.  When you buy, it's nice to be able to inspect in person.....that way you can make sure the rivets are all properly formed.  I have no idea about tapping anything on the Draco line up....unless you're referring to registering the gun as an SBR and drilling/tapping the rear trunnion for a bolts to attach a stock.

The only thing I can think of for using a die would be the 14x1 LH thread on the muzzle...but that's not necessary....just cut off the muzzle nut and thread on your preferred muzzle device (assuming it's legal in your state to have one on a pistol).

I'm def' interested in SBRing it...  I was referring to the riverts in the rear of the receiver to remove for the stock.  Can I attach a vertical grip to the handguard before/after I SBR it or at all?

No need to remove any rivets to install a stock....just drill and tap the factory trunnion.

Yes, after you SBR it, you can attach a VFG....but before hand, you can't unless you want to register it with ATF as a AOW and pay the $200 tax stamp.

IMO, putting it in the drill press is more hassle than it's worth as it would be hard to jig for drilling.  I'd put it in a vise level the rear of the trunnion with a bubble level and then use a 3/8" drill with a bubble level to drill your pilot hole (I'd use a step drill personally.....depending on the kind of stock you are attaching)....then when you get close to the size you need for the tap, use the actually correct size drill bit for the final hole(s).  Then tap it with plenty of oil.  There is NO need....I repeat....NO NEED to drill out any rivets.  You are NOT drilling out rivets.  You are drilling and tapping the very rear of the trunnion for attachment of a folding stock mechanism and stock.  If you are doing an underfolder, you'll drill through the side of the receiver and the rear trunnion....but otherwise, you'll be drilling through the rear of the rear trunnion.

JFYI....
This is a pic of your MI-AK-K rail installed on my Mini.....

I had to cut down the upper handguard on the rail, but the lower fit without modification.

That is great news. Your standard AK rail is excellent and I am sure this one will be too. I will likely replace my DYI project with your universal version that I posted in here with your new model as soon as I get my hands on one.

I've ran about 1500 rounds trough my Mini, and I haven't and a single malfunction...

Tula Ammo is what I've been using, but I'm sure at this point you could use any brand.

On another note though, I can't get my hotdog bun to stay on. Loc-Tite didn't seem to help either. Definitely going invest in a rail system soon.

I already paid for a second one that I just need to go pick up. I would be willing to let you use it.  How long would you need it, if you are interested? If you left one on when you shipped it back, I wouldn't mind... Let me know.

I tried the MI rail  on my Mini with the dedicated upper for a Burris Fastfire2.  Functionally it worked fine but I really wasn't happy with the look or having my optic so far forward.  I ended up getting a Texas Dogleg and modifying my MI to suit my taste.

Sorry for the crappy phone pics.

I really like that.  I was just thinking that they need to make a plain upper half with no rails or mounts that just looks normal.  I like this idea a lot too.
Did you hack up the original upper half to make that or fabricate it from scratch?

I made two new pieces and I also had to cut off and re-tap the upper part that used to hold the upper rail.

Its a demilled HK sight minus the base that comes with it.  I had to mill down the rail a bit to make it work.  I may still do some more work on it before I paint it.
You can find the sights from different guys on the web.  Message me if you want a link.

Very, very nice looking.  I know it is superficial but I like how the smaller mag makes it look more proportional instead of having a 30 rounder that is almost as long as the gun itself.

A few things need to be clarified. As an individual you cannot create an AOW. You would have to have an 07/02 FFL/SOT do it. The FET is $5 for an AOW not $200 as indicated above.

Interesting I've made several SBRs as an individual on a form 1. To create an AOW it's $200 to transfer it's $5 you can make an AOW on a form 1 as well.

Not true.  You can "make" an AOW on a Form 1 the same way you can a SBR/SBS.  And the tax to "make" it is the same $200.  So I can only think of two reasons to go the AOW route; (1) your state will not allow possession of the SBR/SBS, or (2) you expect to sell it at some point and the $5 TRANSFER tax will be more appelaing to a buyer than the $200 associated with the SBR/SBS.
