Hello all. Just managed to get an account on this very fine forum. I have just started to get into building AKs, and have quite a few question to post here.

Anyway, I received my Polish PKMS kit today. Aside from having about 50% finish left on the metal, it would appear the chrome in the bore has began to pill. About three quarters of an inch right at the beginning of the rifling from the chamber, and faintly near the muzzle.

Before I return the kit; should I expect the majority of these kits to have this issue?

Thanks in advance

The word is "peel"or flaking of the chrome.

As for your kit, unless it was advertised as having a bad bore, I would return it. Many AK kits will have "handling" wear on the finish but are fine in terms of barrel condition. The Polish Tantal kits have reported a above average percentage of flaking chrome bores but the PKMS has not been reported that much. I would say you have a good possibility of getting a better replacement kit.

Thanks for the info. Probably will be returning the kit.

My Polish PKMS had some very small flaking of the chrome near the chamber too.  I kept it, as it is very small.  I've heard that the Poles were not the greatest at chrome lining barrels... I guess this is obvious.  Never had flaking issues on any Romanian kits though!

May I ask, where did you get your kit, Tapeo1?

Akron Armory back in July.  It was one of the "B" kits.

The "Peeling" you discribe is from intense heat transfer due to extended Full Automatic Fire of the weapon in question. This in itself will not lead to any preceived accuracy problems as it is close to the lead ins right after the chamber. But it will not stop due to the hard chromed bore's tendency lift from it's last broken area. Don't lose any sleep over this event as it really is nothing to worry about with regard to a safety issue and as far as accuracy 2" at 100 Yds. is good and you'll do that on a bad day.
