How do you mount a muzzle brake on an ak? One without threads.

was this a stupid question or what?

No it wasn't. And I'm surprised too one of the experts didn't have an answer?

I never looked into it but someone should make a slip on break. Most likely it would either have set screws to hold it on or you'd have to cut or drill a notch (or grove) in the surface of the barrel so a cross pin will hold it on.

I was wondering if welding is required.

Not required but if you (or someone you know) can weld, you can weld it on also.
Do what's easier for you. With me I like the idea of being able to remove it if I want, what if I'm not happy with it and want to try a different one.

Edit;
Also I just noticed your in MI, if your state laws require it to be welded on then weld it.

you have to thread your barrel to do it the right way. you can also get a pin on type or a set screw type, but honestly i wouldnt recomend it. i had a pin on 74 style brake on an sks and it never wanted to stay on. (very dangerous)

If the thread has been turned down too much is it still possible to "build up" the surrounding area and weld a standard slant brake on?
