I'll be brief.

I'm new to AKs and am trying to learn it all in a short time.  I thought I knew all the Fed gun regs, but this 922 stuff is new to me.  I'm going to look at some rifles tomorrow, so a quick answer would be good.

My question is this:  If I buy an AK with standard stock and furniture, can I put a folder on it later without having to change our any other parts?  I know thumbhole to pistol grip is a 922 issue.  But is non-folder to folder one also.  It’s dumb enough to be a federal law.

I thought 922 only ment you cant have more than 10 imported parts? If the parts are Made in USA, it would be legal right? Cause even if you replaced a US part your still in the green.

May depend on the rifle configuration you are converting and where the parts being switched were made.

Replacing US made fixed buttstock (KVAR) for a US made folder (ACE) is no problem.

Replacing US made fixed buttstock for a foreign made folder may take you above the naughty limit on 922 parts.

Please Post exactly what you are wanting to switch (parts) on what kind of gun (Century WASR, Arsenal SLR, etc...) out for a better and more specific answer.

apologies in advance for both the noob question (i'll probably get prompty directed to a pinned FAQ) and potential thread highjack...

I've heard that any rifle bought legally is probably 922 compliant, BUT it may not be compliant with foreign magazines?  how do i either know:

A. which rifles/brands/companies are good to go with foreign mags?

or

B. which parts i should replace in order to accomodate the foreign parts on a foreign magazine?

Thx in advance for any help.

awesome - looks pretty simple.  i haven't purchased an AK yet, so I have one more dumb question.  On a newly purchased AK, how do identify which parts are foreign and which aren't?  Is there some documentation that should accompany it which will identify on a part by part basis which are imported and which are not?  Are the parts physically stamped 'Import'?

Thx again.

Turns out, I bought a Yugo folder, but since I may not be finished buying:

I was going to buy a Romanian WASR with a fixed wooden stock and replace it with a folder.  I am / was not sure which folder I was going to get.

WASRs used Romanian wood furniture (excepting the USA Made Pistol Grip), so switching to a E. Bloc folder would still be Kosher!
