I am looking to pick up my first AK and decided I would like a Yugo. I already have my eye on one. Pretty basic, wood stock, not folding or anything else fancy like that. Any advice or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to ARFCOM, stefanosg!

Yugo's are great AK's, chances are you'll be very happy.

Is the rifle you're eyeballing new, or used? Price?

About the only obvious problem that's visible is front sight cant, watch for that.

Its going to be from Century Arms. If I understand it correctly, they build these things from parts and sell them to dealers and then on to people like myself. So, based on that I guess it is new. I am looking at 500 out the door. I'll check for the cant in the sight. If its there, can that be fixed easily?

If sight cant is there and bad, I'd pass on the rifle altogether - but the odds are very much against that. Yes, it's a fairly easy fix though.

Well sweet, dude, hurry up and get it and post pics!

You'll want to avoid a canted site altogether but here are some dealers that sell the mighty yugo m70 in both fixed stock and underfolder. Typically they have return policies on defective goods. With an FFL fee you should definately get it for under $500

Yugos are awesome AKs and IMO the best there is

I picked her up today and here are some pics you asked for. I had an old Soviet flag I used to cover up the tools behind.

Congratulations!

Yugo's ... I just never get tired of looking at 'em.

Looks like you got away with two decent magazines - another benefit of buying in person as opposed to ordering.

Are your flip-up sights drilled for tritium vials? If so, you can have night sights for about $20 bucks.

Where and what should I look for? There is a tab on the front site that flips up to the vertical. Its partially drilled but not completely through.

I bought a Yugo underfolder for $459 at the local Funstore.
It's a Century, no cant in the front sight, and 2 good mags.

My sights are like yours, indents for nightsights, so I need to know
where to get tritium inserts and how to put them in also.

With the sight flipped up, you should hopefully see one hole facing the shooter's eye, and another, VERY TINY, hole drilled down from the top. The vial slips down into that hole and is siliconed in. Is this what you see? I should add that some of these rifles still have the old worn-out vials still siliconed in place, so don't let that throw you off.

On the less desirable type of front sight, there's just a shallow depression facing the shooter and nothing more. The depression is designed for glow paint.

Check out the "best price I've seen on tritium" thread on this board for more info.

These night sights are the shit when refurbished.

Good deal, mine has the hole in the top required to put a tritium vial into.

Looking closer at the indent and the hole leading down to it, I can't help but wonder if it wasn't designed for a similar purpose. A small round plastic like dot with a white possibly glow in the dark coating fit into the indent. Then a drift pin is driven down from above to keep it in place.

I thought I'd snap a pic to help my fellow newbies on the subject

EXCELLENT pic. I've saved it for my own selfish uses (helping newbies); hope you don't mind!

However, no - the purpose of those holes is as stated - the insertion of a tiny glass vial of tritium. The Yugoslavian military used them that way. Mine still had the old no-longer-glowing vials in place when I got it.

OH, and now that you're all excited about night sights, it seems my source is out of the correct size tritium vials right now, at least in green. Sorry about that.

ETA ... is your rear flip-up similarly drilled, from the sides?

Certainly! glad I could help.

Yes my rear sites are also drilled for the Tritium. Here is another pic to illustrate the point. You'll notice mine still had the old worn out ones in place.

I also took the liberty of filling in the numbers on the bridge using a Lacquer Stick. They can be found at most craft stores.

I forgot to mention that I broke her in today. It shot well except that the windage is way off, about 6in at 25yds. On a plus note it did group well. I may have to replace the rear site with one that has windage adjustments, unless you guys know of another way to fix it?
7/21/2007 4:16:16 PM EDT

You adjust windage on these using the front sight.

Get yourself a sight adjustment tool from Tapco. It pushes the big round pin - and the sight post along with it - in the desired direction.

Another excellent pic, BTW. Right click, save.

I was pleased to see that was adjustable and will be ordering the tool in the AM.
