Earlier this year I did a guy at work a favor and he gave me a Chinese SKS w/a 16" barrel for my trouble. It has a screw in barrel and is all milled. It had problems and I got it put back together except for a gas tube. Somebody had squished the original one out of round I guess in a vice trying to install a synthetic gas tube handguard. It was leaking and would occasionally cause the gun to not eject/feed the next round.
I got a fixed ten round mag for $30. Sold the folding stock for $20. He still had the original stock and I put it back on. And today was the day a buddy gave me a new gas tube and piston for free! I have waited for this day! I knew somebody would finally give me one. I really didn't have the money to buy one with $3 gas, kids, etc.
I am sure the gun will work now but of course will test it. That will put me with $10 in this SKS not counting about 400 rounds of ammo I got with it! Oh yeah! It's still like getting one free!
This will be my new van gun once I shoot it and get a sling for it and a few strippers. Another guy already said he would give me a Chinese stripper clip carrier.

I've had a Type 56 since '88. Stick with the 10 shot magazine and it will never do you wrong.
