I'm not sure if this is just a thing with fixed mags or not but I'll ask anyway.

I've got a Yugo SKS with the fixed 10 rnd mag.  On the occasion, when I load a new clip into it, the rounds don't seem to sit right.  I noticed this after a few FTF and saw the round had not loaded completely and had a scrape on the nose.

What appears to be happening is the rounds don't sit with the slight upward tilt as they usually do and then feed badly.  Sometimes not at all and it binds up.  It can be fixed by pushing down on the top case and releasing it so the rounds 'reseat' themselves in the mag and all is well.

I'm not sure what to call it, but could the little arm inside the mag that acts as the mag spring just need some tweaking?

Benny;

I posted a last roung fail to feed problem on this forum with no suggestions.  I placed that same problem on gunbroker and received several suggestions...most had to do with replacing the mag.

I picked up a replacement 10 round fixed mag, and placed the two side by side.  The follower on my original mag is slightly angled.  When you put a shell in it, the bullet points slightly yoward the center.  I initially thought this was OK as you want the bullet point headed that way, right?  But when the bullet is stripped, it tends to angle more toward the center and since it is already headed that way, it tends to go past the chamber opening and toward the right hand side of the receiver.  The follower on the replacement is straight and the bullet sits straight.

Now, I have not tried this new mag yet so I'm not sure if this is the fix for my last round problem or not.  I did notice that the front  portion of my original mag follower sits under the feed lips on the mag.  The follower on the replacement mag sits parallel with the feed lips.

Good luck on your search...you may want to tru "ask the experts" on gunbroker.

If the follower is off kilter that could certainly be a starting point.  This is one of those ya gotta see it things.  Try hand loading your rounds one at a time making sure that they are all going in properly and as far to the rear as possible.  If this consistently produced the desired results check the alignment of the stripper clip in relation to the mag, are all the rounds going in properly from the clip?  It may take some experimentation, but at least you will identify the likely problem.

Heh, I forgot I posted this.

I figure it is the follower but wanted a 2nd opinion.

Shotar, handloading does work fine.  The reason being (I think) is that since I'm going one at a time, I'm being careful as to the seating.  The clip alignment is something to look at, I'll check.  What it seems is that the rounds don't flush up against the mag top when I run a clip in.  I have to sorta fluf the mag by pushing the top rounds down and letting them spring back up.  That gets me a good seating.
