Hello again. I haven't posted here in several months, but this has been a successful place for me thus far when it comes to decisions I make regarding my firearms. I currently own a Norinco SKS, and I really enjoy it. I want to keep it as-is, (having only added the bayonette and sling), but I really like the SKS design itself, and I was thinking about getting another one to modify to a more modern standard. I've seen the Tapco T6 (or Intrafuse?) stock system, and that's honestly what I'm looking for. I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with this, and if you'd recommend it. For the record, I'd like to keep the standard 10 round fixed magazine. I don't have any interest in putting a 20 round clip in it though I know the Tapco system comes with one.
Is that possible? Another question I have is regarding whether or not the system will work with spike bayonettes. Is it only useful with the bladed kind? What can I do as far as putting some type of optic on it. Suggestions? Would another Norinco be recommended as the basis my project? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks! |
| That farther you take an SKS from stock the less robust/functional it becomes. I would recommend staying away from Tapco stock sets. If you want an AR, go that direction. In it's intended role the SKS is great. As a magnet for AR esque accessories, they are a waste of money for poorly conceived benefits. |

I had a feeling I'd encounter some resistance to the question at hand, but I do appreciate you taking the time for a reply.
I realize there are many purists out there, and the reason I own an SKS as it is now is because I enjoy having a traditional model. I just wanted to get a second one and change it up a bit. I'm not looking for high capacity mags or foregrips (I'd like to keep the bayonet), but just a newer stock with the capability to put on a red dot or something like that. I'm not looking to go enter shooting competitions or sell the rifle. It's just an idea I had that I thought would be a fun project for me to work on. |
| I have had a few SKS's in the past and unfortunately traded them away. I finally ended up with a model M. I just upgraded to the tapco t-6 stock because I couldn't stand the wooden thumbhole stock any longer. I really like the tapco. I know it isn't an AR. I have 5 Ar's and access to an m-16 in my work car. I really really want a plain SKS again but I don't regret doing the tapco thing since everything can be reversed. Maybe if funds in the future allow I will come across another plain jane sks. If you are really wanting the tapco I say go for it. Remember you won't be able to make the sks into something it isn't though. |

Do you guys know if I can still keep the fixed ten round mag after I install the new stock? I don't want a removable high capacity mag. I like the aesthetics of the rifle with the fixed mag. Also, I understand they make stocks that allow the bayonet to be retained. I assume they fit the same as the others?
In short I'm looking to get something like a Norinco, (I'd never do this sort of thing to a Russian) put on a newer stock, perhaps some type of receiver cover with a rail and an optic (I realize receiver cover mounts aren't as stable, but I'm not looking to shoot something at 400 yards). |

The scope mount I installed straddles the rear cover but attaches to the receiver. I did have to drill an tap the 4 screws but it is rock solid and I can remove the rear cover and leave the scope mount attached to the receiver. That said I found a scope to be totally useless on my sks. However a red dot was enjoyable. |
