A co-worker bought a SKS and it has a 30 round mag and he says it keep jamming and won't feed correctly. He brought the gun for me to take a look at to see if I can figure out what's going on with it. My first guess would be the mag. He says it looks like the round is coming up short and not feeding. Not ever owning a SKS I thought I would ask to see if this is common issue? What are some of the normal causes? and fixes?

I plan to take a look at it tonight

Thanks in advance

Does he still have the original 10 round mag? If so, try putting that back on the rifle and see if it functions correctly. If he doesn't have it, you might try being sure the 30 round one is inserted correctly. If it is, and it's still not feeding properly, it could possibly be the mag spring. I'm sure someone will be along soon with some other suggestions.

I'd test with the 10 round magazine to sort out if this is magazine related or not.

What is the ammunition he is shooting? Hollow points might not feed correctly and might hit the feed ramp and jam.

How do the magazine feed lips look? Is the 30 round magazine fixed like the 10 round and requires that the bolt be back for the magazine to be inserted/removed? If so, does it looks like the magazine was ripped out or jammed in with the bolt closed?

unless you modify the bolt, the bolt always has to be locked back to insert or remove a magazine.

OP, if you can't get the original ten round fixed mag, try a tapco 20 rounder.

the only 30 rounders i know of are the USA mags and those are of dubious quality.

I know the standard 10 round requires the bolt to be back, but what about the aftermarket magazines, do they all require the bolt to be back, or are there truely detachable models (that don't require rifle modifications)?

the feed lips slide into a notch in the original bolt, the only way to make a mag that could insert with the standard bolt closed would be to not have feed lips, and then it wouldn't be a very good magazine.

I think he has the 10 round mag but didn't bring it with him. After a quick inspection it looks like a POS mag. I can't get it to even feed the first round, it won't get high enough to feed in. I'm going to tell him to just buy another mag.

Probably about 99% of the after market duckbill mags designed for the SKS are junk, the only ones I know of that I would even consider are the Tapco mags.  In some instances the original stock will require some internal  modifications for the Tapco mag to work properly ie removing some wood on each side of the mag well so it doesn't pinch the sides of the mag. when it's inserted otherwise you will have feeding issues.  In some cases on some rifles the mags work just fine with no modification to the stock.

Standard 10 rd. fixed mag SKS rifle have a bolt stop that is push up by the follower inside the 10 rd. fixed mag when the last rd. is fired the follower pushes up the stop and locks the bolt back so the rifle can be reloaded.  The only SKS rifles this doesn't apply to is the Chinese SKS M and D rifles that take AK mags, these rifle have a different bolt configuration altogether than the fixed mag SKS rifles.

If you look at the bolt on the standard SKS you will see there is a groove on each side of the bolt, this is where the feed lips on the magazine ie the original 10 rd. fixed and or aftermarket mag.travel, with the bolt closed there is no way to remove the magazine.  On the Chinese M and D bolts all the metal from the  grooves down has been removed so there is nothing to hold the feed lips to the bolt.  You can modify any standard SKS bolt by removing the extra metal.  Never remove the feed lips on the magazine that is what holds the ammo in the mag.

I concur.  Original mag with lots of stripper clips.

This! You want a high cap get an AK or purpose built SKS from Norinco.

A large mag destroys the look of an SKS anyway.
