I've noticed there is a large amount of questions concerning operational problems with the SKS platform. I am no expert but I myself have had many problems, or so I thought. I couldn't estimate the number of rounds I have ran through my SKS. That said, she is a weapon of war and shouldn't require to much attention when it comes to cleaning. Don't get me wrong her barrel gets brushed about weekly,I try to let her send 5 or 6 boxes of Wolf steel fly a week. I like the SKS better than the AR or the AK . I have yet to replace any parts on my rifle because of wear or breakage. A good scrubbin' goes along way with my SKS, I named her Charlotte not after the spider but the speedway-both nasty and fast and alot of fun.

+1 on keeping a clean gun....The number one part to clean very well on a new purchace SKS is the firing pin. A pain to get out and back in but very necessary!

Like I said a few problems, one being slamfires. two or three round bursts sound cool and it is impressive how fast the SKS will cycle but a dirty firing pin is no joke. Its not a good topic to be brought by the folks next door, and that could be the least of it. Between complete teardown cleanings I like to put drop of gun oil right on the pin. I found NORINCO'S ammo seems to be the gunk king.

The easiest way to avoid slamfires is to just get a '49 or early '50 russian.

Three best ways to avoid slam fires in the SKS.

1. Use the correct type of ammo with hard primers for rifles with free floating firing pins, don't use American made soft primed ammo.

2. Keep your bolt clean and the firing pin oil free and dry, several ways to do this.  Take the bolt apart to clean it,boil it then blast it out with high pressure air and finish it off with brake cleaner thought the firing pin hole and make sure it  always rattles freely before reinstalling it.  Never had mine apart and shoot all kinds of Russian and my reloaded ammo never had a problem using the original firing pin.

3. Murray's Spring load firing pin replacement. replace the firing pin shoot whatever ammo you want Russian,American or reloaded ammo with Mil-Spec primers or standard primers.

It's not so much you need to keep your SKS clean, it's just that you need to MAKE SURE you get all the cosmo out of every nook and cranny of the firearm.

I would say 9 out of 10 issues on the SKS board are due to a gummed up action from cosmo.
