| just wondering about the accuracy of these guns... I have a Norinco, open sites. I know the question is somewhat subjective, just wanting to hear what others have to say at 50, 100, 250, 500 yrds, etc. thanks for any positive response. and... whats the best ammo for this gun, or does it matter? shooting coyotes |

Well I will be the first to tell you that an SKS in decent shape is allot more accurate than most people would give it credit for,but not with the ammo about 99% of most people shoot in then. Question is want is acceptable accuracy for you,if your just wanting to send a few Rds.of lead down ranger spray a few targets, pop a few tin cans or steel plates then about any of the Russian offerings will serve your purpose. If you want to hunt with and SKS at a reasonable distance and be assured a good hit and clean kill my personal limit is about 150 Yds or less on deer size game or smaller. If your shooting Mill surplus matches small steel plates usually about 13" by 8" or shooting man size targets out to 300 Yds. and want to get good consistent groups on a regular basis then you need to reload and tailor your ammo for your rifle just like you would any other you shoot, the Russian offerings just want match reloads no matter how you slice it. If you cant reload then the best approach is to get a couple boxes of various brands and do a test shoot to find which one shoots the most accurately in your rifle and stick with it. Bullet construction is another consideration I load SP for hunting and FMJ for target and longer range shooting. I use the same brand and weight of bullets in both SP & FMJ and the same powder and charge weight for both rounds, and shoot them both in my YUGO and my Chinese SKS. I set my sights the same on both rifles so point of impact with the irons sights is the same so no matter which rifle I pick up or which load I put in the magazine they both shoot to the same point of impact. If you decide to end up putting a scope on your rifle get a good solid mount like a Choate drill and tap mount I have one on my YUGO and its rock solid along with a decent scope. Last if you needs call for something out past 300 yds. I would just get another rifle 7.62 x 39mm just doesnt hold up for much past that distance. |
