I've been in the AK game since 2004 but have not made a serious attempt to get a krinkov.  I really want to get a 5.45 krinkov as a post deployment present to myself sometime next year. I have some other questions, I have enough refrences to address the sbr paperwork, I'm just focusing on availability and parts:

Where could I even get a 5.45 krinkov to start out with?  Are parts kits expected to get fewer and fewer?
Since I have 5.56, 7.62x39, and 5.45 (5.45 is by far my favorite caliber) should I really limit myself to finding just a 5.45 or are the other caliber krinks just as good (lack of malfunctions, easier to obtain)?
What are the best non-wood handguards out there for the krinkov?  I really like the ones at K-var but I am probably sure they are all long gone now, any other options?
The price tag for me won't really be an issue, I'm putting a lot aside for this project.  If I can't get a kit/made gun, what other options do I have?  I've seen other AK's scaled down to be made into a Krinkov, just wondering if there is another alternative.

You'd have to hunt the equipment exchange on here and other forums or auction sites like gunbroker to find one. They are scarce and fairly pricey. I'd try and find a 107ur with 16" barrel still intact. You could waitfor the SBR paperwork to com in while you are deployed and then when you get back could send it off to get shortened.

I thought you said you liked the 5.45 though?

That's affirmative, but I'm just exploring my options, thanks for the info so far, looks like this is going to be tougher than I though... or at least just more expensive

Probably be easier to just buy a complete rifle.  They can be spendy, but easier than having one built, tracking down a barrel, etc, etc,...

By far from unpossible though.

If you are going the 5.45 route you won't find a factory made rifle. You could definatly find a kit build on gunbroker if you're patient though.

Well there ARE those SBR Krink builds from Arsenal in 5.45 they did. Pretty sure they only had like 10 of them but its the closest thing to factory as youre going to get with a 5.45. Good luck finding on though lol. Technically still a kit build though.
