I have heard for years of a Maadi 93 ARM imported by INTRAC that had been imported with the sear cut and 3rd pin hole in the reciever. The extra holes had been plugged. These guns were recalled per the BATF but I understand that some guns made it out and were sold to the public. If this were true would this gun be legal to own. I believe that I saw one of these at a show recently but was reluctant to buy it due to doubts about it's legality.
My friend bought a rifle like that around 1992. He and I bought two rifles on the same day and our FFL called, telling him to bring his Maadi back to the shop. Mine was fine but his had the third hole. He was given a replacement and his first rifle was sent off to the ATF.
I was the owner of one of these Maadi rifles for a couple weeks back in the day (still have the accessories and manual). It had the extra holes cut and plugged. I thought that I made out well, since the muzzle nut was not welded. The finish was also very nice. My dealer friend called me one day and said that he was sending me a letter recalling these rifles. He indicated that ATF was after these guns and suggested that I call the importer. I called and they arranged for a swap. Unfortunately, the new Maadi was not as nice, at least until I had Chris Butler turn it into a nice EG clone many years later. All of this because of two plugged holes and now they say US purchased AKs are being used in Mexico. What Mexican would want one of our neutered AKs when he could have a real on on the Mexican black market.
