Has anyone done a limited upgrade of a Saiga by using just enough US parts to use hi caps while conforming to current regulatory guidance?   To me the pg is optional and I like the factory bolt hold open feature of the Saiga.   If anyone out there has done this, I would like to know what you replaced, what type pins you used for the FCG and any other useful details.

Multi- see my tacked thread about stock saigas and high cap mags at the top of the forum.  I'm convinced that you don't need any US parts for highcap mags, since the saiga has none of the other offending features of the 89 ban, but others disagree...

MRW,

Note that I used the words "conforming to current regulatory guidance", and not law.  Clearly, it is debatable; however, the current practice of the regulator is to use the "sporting purposes test" which they say means that imported rifles cannot have a magazine capacity that exceeds 10 rounds.   I just prefer to be conservative until all of the issues are sorted out.

well, if you don't have the pistol grip, you need 4 us parts.

hammer
disconnector
gas piston
mag follower
mag floorplate

take your pick!

OK, I think you would include the trigger among those parts too.  Now,  do the factory stock trigger pins have grooves in them to hold the springs in position or are they just smooth?  Obviously after they are drilled out, they would need to be replaced.  If you are adding a PG and moving the FCG, the axis pins are already there, but if you want to leave the FCG in the factory position, replacement pins are needed.  Do you have any thoughts or recommendations?

Factory bolt hold open ? Are we talking Saiga 12 or Saiga 7,62/.223/5.45 here?

The Saiga 7.62 has a small switch that you can manually engage to hold the bolt open.  That is what I am referring to.

I'm confused now as to what you are doing.

Are you keeping the factory trigger setup with the link engagement system?

Or are you switching out the fire control group for a standard AK set?

If you do the latter, you will have to do the entire pistol grip conversion becasue the trigger will be moved forward to the standard position.

If you keep the factory FCG system, you may not use the trigger as a replacement part unless you cut off the finger extension and fit it to the goofy inernals.

When you say trigger pins do you mean the pins that go in the standard holes or do you mean the extra two rear pins that hold the modified trigger and link?  The standard hole pins are standard, with the grooves.  The extra rear pins are not pins but long rivets and are destroyed when removed.

I think you need to open up a Saiga and look inside.  I'm not sure we're on the same level.

MRW,

Thanks for your patient input.  You definitely are ahead of me on all of this.  But yes, I have opened up a Saiga and looked around.   What you say regarding the trigger makes sense.   I previously was under the mistaken impression that the FCG was interchangeable with standard parts.   Regarding the pins, I was referring to the rivets in the factory location which would be drilled out anytime you replace FCG parts.  It appears to me that these do not have grooves in them - they look smooth.

okay, no prob.  I just was just getting mixed up!

to keep the sporter look and the goofy transfer bar trigger system, you can replace the hammer and disconnector, but the trigger is modified and so it would have to stay. That leaves two more parts to replace, gas piston and ??

I still think you are fine without US internals...
