I really want to buy an AK-47 variant. I have found a VEPR II on the internet for $550 NIB. I know about the weight of it and that is not an issue. Who has one out there and what can you tell me about it? Is it worth it? How was your front sight? Would you recommend one? What are the best optics for short/long range shooting? Thank you. |

Yes..their excellent rifles. IMHO, they're the best deal out there. I actually like the ergonomics of the non-traditional furniture they come with. The finish isn't as nice as a custom AK, but it's easy enough on the eyes. take care, Tec Oh yeah, they are a tad front heavy, but I don't mind..actually prefer the 20", so that's even heavier. It's a really solid rifle...I think you'll notice that more than the weight of the front. |

Hey Tec, How long have you owned the VEPR II? I am looking hard at acquiring one of their carbines in .223 and one of the full size rifles in .308. I had originally wanted a S.A. M1A, but for the same price I can buy the two VEPR II's with muzzle brakes. I'd be interested to hear about any problems that you have had, or if you love 'em more each day. Thanks. |

Never had a single problem with it when using the converted bakelite that comes with the rifle. I tried some 5.56 Bulgarian waffles, but they were hit or miss. I heard that you can modify them, but i didn't bother...bakelites work fine with just a follower replacement. It really is a great bargain. take care, Tec |
| I bought a VEPR II 223 from Robinson Armament and I think its sweet. However, after doing extensive research on ammo prices, mag prices and ballistics I would recommend getting the 7.62x39 cal. 7.62 rounds are half the price of 223 rounds and the mags are 1/4 the price and easier to find. Also the 7.62 has better long range ballistics and penetration characteristics than the 223. |

well, the 7.62 version is surely cheaper to deploy, but the 7.62 caliber does NOT have better long range ballistics than the .223. The .223 is a much flatter shooting round than the 7.62x39. Penetration? you're comparing .22 v .30 caliber. Go here: www.ammo-oracle.com/ |
Actually at 300 yd ranges 62 grain military 5.56 can penetrate much more than 7.62x39. |
| I agree that the .223 round is more accurate that the 7.62, it's a faster round. But in terms of short range penetration I think the 7.62 is superior. The .223 shatters on impact with most surfaces, but a 7.62 round will pass through more. This is why most police departments are switching to .223 because it does not over penetrate. |
| The VEPR K in 223 is as close to a real Galil as you will come without shelling out over 2K. It is a litte heavy compared to other AK's but not that much. Very accurate with a nice QD scope setup. The mags can be converted 5.45 mags with new followers and a little dremel on the feed lips. Buy a converted one from Robinson so you have something to go by on the modifications. You will not regret getting one. |
