My question is, how do I take it off? I know that some of them are pinned in place but theres no visible pin as far as I can tell. I tried pliers (but not super hard) to see if it would just un screw which it didnt (righty to loosen). There also seems to be dried something like between the protector and the muzzle thread shoulder. Is it out of the question that some kind of glue was used?
Im basically looking for some reassurances before i go full strength and potentially mess up the end of my barrel because I didnt think it through enough.

Look for a small tac weld. Dremel it off carefully. Then it will unscrew easily.

No tac weld found. I looked and looked and looked- its smooth all the way around. Tonight, I decided just go for it, I took some vice grips and twisted with effort. Well the protector came off and to my surprise, there were no threads underneath but there was a channel for a pin. Also, the rough crusty stuff you see is in fact rough crusty stuff. It flakes off like dried glue (which I'm thinking it is). The protector that came off is completely smooth on the inside. I just assumed if it had a protector, it would be threaded but I guess a pinned break was used in Russia and replaced to sporterize it.
A little bit more work but oh well. I'm thinking I'll go with a 5/8x24 cnc warrior thread kit.

I have a .308 Vepr that was imported with the Molot flash hider installed. I suspect it looks like yours underneath, but don't know for sure.
