I recently bought my first AK variant, a Saiga 7.62x39.  I bought it with the back end already converted.  I was having trouble finding a gas tube that would work for the upper handguard, but I found one that I think works.  It's a used AK 47 gas tube from a Polish fixed stock kit.  Will it work?  It seems like it would from what I can find, but I haven't been able to find a specific answer for it.  I have already ordered it (out of stock now), but I won't be able to check for a few weeks when I get get the rest of the parts.

Here's the gas tube I ordered. (http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30568)

Also, do I need to get an upper handguard retainer spring? (https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_info.php/products_id/1978)

Cliffs

1.  Will a Polish AK 47 gas tube work for converting the front end of a Saiga 7.62x39?

2.  Do I need an upper hand guard retaining spring?

Any AK74 gas tube from Bulgy or Russia will work after you mod the locking bevel by grinding it a bit.  The lower guard need a back clip and heat shield. Upper plastic will lock into grooves. Check out You Tube vids.

not all 74 gas tubes require fitting, or grinding. The AKM gas tube may require some minor fitting. When you get it, slap it on there and see how it fits.

Any certain ones to look for that might not require modding?

UPDATE:

The used Polish AK 47 gas tube came in today.  It was used, but it only had a little wear and one little rust spot that was easily taken care of.

IT FITS!  It is the first part of the front end conversion that I have. but I still stripped the rifle down to test fit.  It required absolutely no modification to fit and it feels solid.  If it wiggles a little bit when I get handguards to put on it, then I'll put the retaining spring from the Saiga handguard on it.

They are out of stock now.  I ordered it a few days ago when there were 5.  By the next morning, they were out of stock.  It seems to be a hard to find item.

EDIT: I just checked and they are back in stock.  They have 40 as of the time of this post.

you can find them in the ee you just have to look everyday,  I purchased one from AK-Builder,  they do go out of stock and are a hard to find item,  I purchased one from the EE and it was brand new,  I had to file it some to get it to fit,  it works,  waiting on my handguards to come in now.

if you're looking for an accurate representation, then correct, non-vented. However, it doesn't really matter either way.
