Could someone identify and date this hand guard set. There are no vents cut in handguard so would this make them for a 47 instead of a 74? also what is the retainer spring used for, perhaps it is proprietary to a specific gas tube? I was going to use them on a 7.62x39 saiga conversion but i don't think these are correct. I was told they were put on a 1973ish rifle just before they switched to the "lightening cut" lams they started using in 1974. I have my doubts though. Pretty set__ but i don't think they'll work or look right on a saiga conversion.

I would say they are early AK-74 ones and would look perfect on your Saiga conversion .Ive got a pair of Soviet AKM ones on mine along with an AKM pistol grip and ribbed receiver cover.Im not bothered if its not correct as i think it looks good.......besides you cant beat a bit of Soviet laminated loveliness on an AK!

The upper handguard without the bevel and heat vent cuts are indicative of the early AK74 design. Is the cut out for the upper handguard retaining clip in the rear or middle? Either way, you can install the upper handguard with or without the retaining clip.

BTW, the lower handguard is from the AK74. The Saiga would be "correct" if you were to use black polymer furniture since it's base of the AK100 series.  You can use the furniture you have or get true AKM furniture but it wouldn't look right with the 90 degree gas block and other AK100 features.

Yes it does have the cut out on the upper handguard. Here is the complete stock set I bought at a premium price. This is clearly a mismatched set. It's my own fault for not doing my homework and I am not to happy about it. What still baffles me also is the non-vented handguard __ can't seem to much info on them. So, to get this conversion correct i will need to find a 45 degree gas block and find correct vented upper and lower handguard for this project . These Russian stocksets have dried up and no one seems to have them in stock, and i highly doubt i will find a 45 degree gas block. So, what i have is a bitch stock__ early refurbed AKM butt stock and a late type 2  '74" lower and a uncommon non-vented upper.  Is this correct? Probably need to trade or sale to at least get correct period.

Not sure how you guys come off with importing stuff but quite a few sites on the net that are based in the Ukraine etc that supply matching sets of furniture, pistol grips etc.Check out the site below, ive had had loads of Soviet items from them and the service is superb.Their Tiger Stripe stock sets are to die for!.
