| How much does it cost to convert a Saiga .223 these days? How much more is it generally to have it done by a shop? |
|
A basic kit from Carolina Shooters Supply is $125. Depending on what magazines you want to use, you might need a bullet guide ($14). If you don't have a tap and die they have a bullet guide kit with the tap and die for another $5. I recommend buying their flat tipped carbide bit for drilling out the rivets. It's possible with a standard chiseled bit but it's harder to do unless you have a drill press. I used a hand drill.
Shops will generally charge a lot more and many of them have waiting lists for custom work. Doing the conversion yourself isn't hard. It took me about 3 hours to do my 5.45, which included mounting a US Palm/MI rail and installing a Trijicon RMR. |

How much does it cost to convert a Saiga .223 these days? How much more is it generally to have it done by a shop? Best .223 conversion. Period. I believe this to be one of the best, if not the best, .223 conversions out there. I've met with the owner of Definitive Arms, Chase Sisgold, he does excellent work. I've handled one of these conversions, and they are top notch awesome! I'm looking forward to meeting up with Chase again, hopefully we'll have enough free time to hit the range.
Check it out. I doubt you'll be disappointed. |

Check it out. I doubt you'll be disappointed. I would say that it largely depends on what kind of quality you want in your conversion. As cheap as possible, you can reuse the trigger guard, and get some basic parts and have it done for $100-$125 doing it yourself. All of my conversions, and many others here go the extra step to make it as close to factory as possible. New trigger guard rivetted into place, new gas block and front sight base, feedramp, gas tube, new furniture, etc. Doing it that way makes it a much more quality conversion, but it will of course be more costly. Having a shop complete a quality conversion will run atleast as much as a kit build from what I have been quoted by a few, but that was a year or two ago before I bit the bullet and bought all the AK tooling to do it myself. Not sure what shops are charging currently with them becoming harder to find and election worries. |

do the basic yourself 1st. You'll thank yourself later. Then if you feel so inclined, convert the front half. I was never satisfied with just the rear being converted on any of mine. Asuao85 stated, I do the whole works, GB, FSB, lower HG retainer, trigger guard. I even weld up the holes on mine. The last conversion I did (was a $299 blowout Saiga deal) ended up costing my about $550. That includes all the barrel parts, rivets, firearm etc. The conversion aren't that hard, but I'd pit any of mine against anything else out there. I'm biased though ![]() |

Thanks for the info everyone.
