Hi guys - - these questions are so obvious  that I hesitated to post them. I did a search but didnt find the exact answer I was looking for. I only ask, because there have been times in the past when I thought I knew "absolutely 100%" what the answer was and it came back to bite me . . so, -

I'm relatively new to the AK.  As I understand it, the Arsenal SGL21 is an Izhmash Saiga rifle that has been 'converted' to the AK style. Are there any parts on the SGL21 (7.62x39) which can only be purchased from kvar ?  If you wanted to buy a new bolt, bolt carrier, piston, etc for an SGL21  - - could I purchase them from any Saiga dealer ? Who carries lots of Saiga and Arsenal parts (besides kvar)?

I ask these questions because I don't want to be captured by a single supplier on parts. I have the Arsenal SGL 21, but am thinking of getting or doing the partial conversion on a Saiga. This is to save money while still having a well functioning rifle. I'd like my AKs to use common parts as much as possible.

Thank you in advance for your replies. Its appreciated.

Kvar will have them, but bolts are no interchangeable. Who carries lots of Saiga and Arsenal parts (besides kvar)? There are other places like, Krebs, Carolina Shooters Supply (I think that's their name), Dinzag...etc that carry parts.

I'm usually a huge advocate on Saiga conversions myself. If you had done one the 1st time around, your research would have led you to the suppliers you just asked about. That being said, go forth and convert!!!! You learn all kinds of good stuff and have fun too!

nictra - - - Thank you for kindly taking the time to reply.  Doing the conversion sounds like a fun & interesting project. I'lll have to look further into it.

P.S. - - Did I understand your reply correctly that the bolt on a Saiga 7.62x39 and SGL21 (in the same caliber) aren't the same ?

Best regards & thanks again, - - -

saiga and SGL bolts should be the same type, but each bolt is head spaced to it's rifle. Bolt carries can be swapped, but not bolts. There are always exceptions, but just think of it as each bolt is specific to it's rifle for now. Less confusing that way.

I see - - - if for some reason you needed to replace a bolt, you could do so.  With the proper skills you could headspace it, - - or have a gunsmith do it for you.

How about the bolt and carrier for the Saiga 5.45 or SGL 31, are those parts interchangable with any other AK74 type rifles from other countries like the Bulgaria or Poland?

they are all using the newer 100 series bolts and bolt carriers. Some don't like that b/c the diameter of the bolt is smaller than AKM bolts. I don't see a problem, but I'm not a structural engineer and don't know how to run the #'s to see what difference it makes.
