The Russian picture thread got me to wondering, how come they rooskies didn't switch the flash suppressor on their Ak's to the design used on the AN94, that snail shell contraption? That thing also suppresses much of the sound from what I read.

that is why if it makes the shot more quiet it is a suppressor and requires a tax stamp

Sorry, I'm asking why the Russian military did not switch to it?

Looks to me like it would require retrofitting the whole front site. While not an issue for you or me, think of the millions of rifles this would need to be done to.

I would think they could just replace the flash suppressor

AK 74 has the threads attached front site. The threads, or the whole site would need to be replaced. Then the barrel will need to be threaded to accommodate the AN94 muzzle brake, if that's how it even attaches. It's just speculation on my end b/c I have no clue how they have it set up. It could very well be an integral part of the front site also....

ETA:

used my google-fu and found this:

so the barrel is threaded for the device, and it attaches to the front site also, so you would need both pieces.

Looking at removal of front site from current AK74s, thread the barrel, new AN94 front sites attached, comp attached.

There's also the possibility that the barrel diameter is different on the AN94 also. The site may also be taller. It may require a redesign of the comp to even work.

Well, the whole barrel reciprocates, so a muzzle device like that could be attached to either the front sight base or the barrel, it wouldn't matter.

Just seems like it would easy to redesign the attatchment to replace current muzzle brakes
