First question:

Which of these is your favorite type of red stained furniture? I'm torn between these and want your opinions.

I like number 3 for the stain, and also I just bought my 5.45 last week, but I lack motivation and im not sure where to start the conversion

I like the blond in the raw look the best to be honest...

I still like that 2nd but with the kind of translucent look of the 3rd BUT I'm torn between that idea and #1 because of its uniqueness...Decisions, decisions

On another note, hat's a good place to get a threaded FSB? Preferably with everything that's needed for the installation (if, not, what do I need and where do I get it).

use to be APEX. For ease of install, get a take-off. 98% of the saiga's I've converted, the holes lined up perfect.

Of the choices I agree

Personally I am not a fan of the red or pink look that seems to be the popular impression of Soviet laminate.

Just to let you know the Timber Smith "American Hardwood" is really poplar wood and Tapco's "Russian Red" is really more of a wussy pink color and hardly "Russian Red"!

I learned the hard way and ordered one of these hardware kits and had to strip it down to bare wood(very soft polar wood) and refinish it using the picture below.  In the end I am happy with how my rifle turned out but would not have used this Timber Smith set and sent a few more dollars and wnet with the Iron Wood sets

I wasn't a fan of TS's prestained furniture so i got the unfinished version

Update: I got a Bulgy FSB along with the zig zag brake yesterday. Also, I'm going to have to wait to convert my rifle later in the week when I have the tools handy but in the meantime, I'll finish finishing the furniture (I went with option 1 and am about to put the 4th coat of poly on) :-D

I feel the same way.  I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a true Russian AK with red furniture.  Where did this idea come from?  There may be shades of red in some furniture sets but it's more like a dark honey brown or caramel color.

There is NO stain on soviet wood.

NONE.

It's all in the shellac that was used at the time. With that said you get the following variations:

Honey
Honey Orange
Honey Orange Brown
Honey Brown

Amber
Amber Orange
Amber Orange Brown
Amber Brown

And any other thousand of Amber / Orange / Brown combinations that are the result of different shellacs used through the shellac machine. The whole notion of Russian Red is not accurate and dumb. You want the right look, shellac it till it matches the color of your dreams.

Ivan would open the next can of shellac, put it in the machine and get to work shellacing.

How many coats of poly do you think is enough?? I'm letting the 8th coat of Minwax Clear Gloss dry now (5 coats of brush-on poly and 3 coats of wipe-on poly).

By the way, I went with my first option
