He's wrong.

The Russians have been using it on most AK's since the early 90's when they standardized on the AK74M. It's true that AK47 and AKM pattern rifles don't use it but those were replaced by the AK74 in 1974.

In the nineties the modern AK100 series was born, basically an AK74M chambered in 7.62 or 223

what Zen said. However.....the caveat is that these rifles are having the 74 brake installed here IIRC. Then again, they may not since the SGL10's were coming in with them....This whole who is installing what and what config they supposedly come into the country in thing has confused me....

how off am I?

O.K. so this rifle I am looking at it's a AK 74 not a AK 47 chambered in a 7.62x39

It's two sides actually

Russia does use the AK74M brake on the AK100 series; however we don't get those here in the states. Arsenal manufactures their own US compliant AK74M style brake along with slapping on the 922R compliance parts for the SGL's

So Russia makes a AK47 but instead of putting a slant brake they had added the ak74 style brake. So it's a Ak47 because of the Cal. right.
Since Russia cannot ship with thier Ak74 style brake Arsenal makes their own.

No Russia doesn't make the AK47 anymore (that stopped in the 50's) and they don't make the AKM anymore either (stopped in the 70's)

What they make now are AK74M's in 5.45x39. They use the same rifle in different calibers which are called the AK100 series.

When chambered in 7.62 it's called an AK103
In 5.56 it's an AK101

An SGL31 is basically a fixed stock AK74M
An SGL21 is a fixed stock AK103

We in the west associate the 7.62 AK as being an AK47 but there were lots of design changes over the past 60 years. The original AK47 is long gone.

Not much to get. TX-Zen's post is pretty straight forward and simple.

Unless they are -94's. Then they are pretty damn close to the real deal.

(added for the OP's sake)

+1 to this, SGL31-94 and SGL21-94 are basically the same as the real AK74M and the AK103. (As far as I can tell anyway)

Just needs the PG plate and Russian triggerguard, not counting the compliance parts.
